San Antonio Municipal Archives and Records program preserves City's history

Historical records, aerial photographs of the city, mayoral collections and other valuable items can be accessed at the City of San Antonio's Municipal Archives and Records Facility. The Archives Program was founded in 2005 and is intended to preserve and share the City's historical findings.

Currently, the collection includes archived City Council minutes, ordinances, aerial photographs of the city, city engineering maps and historical items that have been restored and reproduced such as letters from Mexican General Santa Anna and President of Mexico Porfirio Diaz.

The collections are fully searchable online at www.sanantonio.gov/clerk/Archives. The online medium allows many users to interact with rare documents simultaneously.

The City's new archivist, Sarah Walch, will continue to add to the collection. Walch, a resident of San Antonio, received her bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University and her master's degree in Information with a specialization in Archives and Records Management from the University of Michigan's School of Information.

Walch has worked in archives across the country, from College Station to Richmond, California, to the Everglades, and knows that the City of San Antonio's rich history provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for archival development and growth.

"I am proud of the city's collections thus far and especially proud of the digital materials available to the public" Walch said.

City Clerk Leticia Vacek stated that the future of the archives largely depends on partnerships built within the community. Vacek stated "I look forward to strengthening existing relationships with local conservation groups and business entities of San Antonio in order to eventually create the City's first ever History Center."
