Our vision is to provide
leadership, maximize resources, and improve the quality of life within our
community. The Department of Community Initiatives
offers opportunities for college students in San Antonio and the surrounding
area to gain valuable experience through this mission.
Community Initiatives provides
or supports services covering interests in many degree programs. Individuals
pursuing graduate and undergraduate
studies are encouraged to participate in these programs.
Interns will have
opportunities to become involved with one or more of the Department’s programs,
including those involving early childhood education, state and federal childcare
programs, youth programs, juvenile justice, adult education, and senior
programs.

The Department will work to satisfy academic and course
requirements for internships and will meet any program duration needs of any
institution. The Department does have MSW staff managers who will provide any
direct supervision as may be required for interns pursuing an MSW. Internships
can be formal (e.g. for course credit) or informal (e.g. for personal
development/experience) with varying durations: year-round, by semester, by
project, or shorter. Where appropriate or necessary, interns are normally
provided office workspace, a PC with access to the World Wide Web and a
telephone.
Scheduling is flexible but interns normally participate
a minimum of 16 hours per week and a maximum of 40 hours. Days and hours of
participation are tailored to each intern’s course/work schedule and generally
must fall within normal City work hours of Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Some programs may require early evening or weekend hours on an occasional basis.
Most internships are non-paid, however, depending on
grants awarded to the Department each year, a few paid internships may be
available for graduate interns.
