                     Community Initiatives - Literacy Services
   
                        








GOALS

  • To expand community awareness of the dimensions of the urban literacy problem;

  • To publicize, promote, and coordinate ongoing service efforts;

  • To energize new resources to combat the problem of illiteracy;

  • To develop a coalition of adult literacy service providers; and,

  • To support and facilitate school dropout prevention programs and other youth literacy activities.

MEMBERSHIP

The Commission is comprised of eleven members appointed by the City Council and seven ex-officio members. The ex-officio members are the Chairperson, or designated individual, from the following groups: San Antonio Public Library Board, San Antonio Youth Literacy, San Antonio Coalition of Literacy Providers, and the Education Service Center-Region 20, Northside ISD, North East ISD, and SAISD Adult Education Cooperative. Also, a City Council member serves as a liaison to the community.

The following sectors are represented on the Commission as well:

  • Primary/ Secondary Education

  • Higher Education Sector

  • Adult Literacy Service Provider Agencies

  • Corporate community

  • Media

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every other month at 4:00 p.m. The meeting site is rotated among the Learning and Leadership Development Centers.
