Residential customers are still eligible to receive two free collections of grass clippings and leaves per fiscal year up to 50 bags, but now residents are required to use paper bags or cardboard boxes for those collections. The City will no longer pick up grass clippings or leaves placed in plastic bags.
Residents are encouraged to use two-ply paper lawn and leaf bags that can be purchased from local retailers. If residents prefer to use cardboard boxes, they must be made of brown bio-degradable cardboard. Total material collected may not exceed eight cubic yards and each individual paper bag or cardboard box must not weigh more than 40 pounds. All paper bags and cardboard boxes must also be securely closed, have a wet strength of 40 pounds, be resistant to breakage when lifted and must be able to be easily lifted and handled by a single individual.
Usage of the paper bags and cardboard boxes will allow the Solid Waste Management Department to recycle all of the items instead of having to throw away plastic bags. As the department continues to work toward a 60 percent recycling rate by 2020, this change will help the City get one step closer to that goal.

Reporting graffiti in San Antonio just got a touch easier. The City's Graffiti Abatement Program has teamed up with http://app-order.com/ to create "mySanAntonioTX" smart phone application that will allow residents with Android phones to send real time graffiti information and photos to the department.
Android users can download the "mySanAntonioTX" application for free fromt he Android Market. Once installed, users simply open the application and follow the prompts to take a picture of the graffiti and then submit the information. Using a built-in global positioning system the application will attach a location to the picture and send the information to the Graffiti Abatement Program. The electronic submissions will then be routed to the appropriate City staff or outside agency. Residents can also c hoose to receive updates on the status of their request.
The "mySanAntonioTX" application was created at no cost to the City. App-Order.com develops Smartphone apps with web interfaces for government and private industry customers throughout the United States.
Residents with iPhones are expected to be able to obtain the "mySanAntonioTX" within the next six weeks. For more information on this new program, call Lisa McKenzie, graffiti abatement coordinator, Code Enforcement Services Department at 207-5430.
