Military Lighting Overlay District (MLOD)

    Overview

On April 2, 2009, the City’s Military Lighting Overlay District (MLOD) was approved by the San Antonio City Council in an effort to limit impact of outdoor lighting on nighttime military training operations. MLOD rezoned all properties within three miles of the Camp Bullis Military Installation to include an overlay zoning district that places additional standards for outdoor lighting. Additionally, as a result of the findings of the Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study, the City Council has initiated a second phase of this project, which would expand the scope of the original effort to include an additional two miles. Thus, the MLOD would encompass a five-mile radius around Camp Bullis.

Short facts about the MLOD – Please be sure to review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) sheet, which is in the General Information section below:
- Affects both commercial and residential properties as well as parking lots, signs and street lighting.
- The MLOD regulates the type, intensity, and positioning of outdoor lighting for all affected properties. (proposed expansion to five miles)
- All previously installed, lawfully existing lighting would be considered legally nonconforming, and will not be required to be altered upon adoption of the MLOD.
