BIOMEDICAL
San Antonio’s
research institutions have a strong array of expertise in basic
and applied research in microbiology, nanotechnology, pharmacology,
cancer treatment, vaccine production, instrumentation, and
specialized medical treatments. Major institutions include: the
University of Texas Health Science
Center,
Southwest Research Institute, the
Southwest Foundation
for Biomedical Research, the
Cancer Therapy and Research Center,
Texas Research Park, Brooks Technology and Business Park, the
UTSA-Brooks Bioprocessing Center, the U.S. Army Institute of
Surgical Research, and numerous other academic institutions
and private Biomedical enterprises.
In
addition to the excellent institutions San Antonio is also
investing heavily in a highly skilled knowledge base. The
University of Incarnate Word's
Feik School of
Pharmacy was awarded candidate
accreditation status during the June 20-23, 2007 meeting of the
ACPE Board of Directors. The University of Texas San Antonio
(UTSA) has established new doctoral programs in the biosciences
towards
achieving
Tier 1 research university status. UTSA has also
recently completed construction of an $84 million
Biotechnology Sciences and Engineering building on the UTSA
1604 Campus.
In 2004 the Biomedical
industry had at total economic impact of $13.7 billion, paid $4.2
billion to more than 109,000 persons and created 2,700 net new
jobs in San Antonio. Various public and private San Antonio
stakeholders have partnered to create
BioMedSA to promote and help
develop the Biomedical industry in San Antonio. For the latest
industry study please visit our partners at the
