Shelter in Place

Whether you are at home, work or elsewhere, there may be situations when it's simply best to stay where you are and avoid any uncertainty outside. There are other circumstances when staying put and creating a barrier between yourself and potentially contaminated air outside, a process known as "shelter-in-place," is a matter of survival. Use available information to assess the situation. If you see large amounts of debris in the air, or if local authorities say the air is contaminated, you may want to take this kind of action.

Tex is ready. Are you?
tex

Tex, the Shelter-in-Place Turtle, can help children and adults learn more about emergency preparedness. If you would like Tex and a local emergency management official to visit your school or organization, call one of the following numbers:

San Antonio
San Antonio Fire Department Public Information Office
at 207-6634. Or call 3-1-1.
Bexar County
Bexar County Office of Emergency Management at 335-0300

How to Shelter in Place:

• Lock doors, close windows, air vents and fireplace dampers
• Take your emergency supply kit
• Go into an interior room with the fewest windows
• Be prepared to improvise and use what you have on hand to seal gaps
so that you create a barrier between yourself and any contamination.
• Bring your family and pets inside
