Team Better Block will be in San Antonio at Alamo Plaza on August 17 and 18. Community members can get involved with the Pre-Build Workshop on August 10 and 11. The "Better Block" project is a community revitalization effort that temporarily demonstrates how to revision an area with bicycle, pedestrian and transit infrastructure mixed with art, culture, and street life. As part of the City of San Antonio's Center City Development Office's place-making initiative, the community is invited to help build a Better Block at Alamo Plaza between East Houston and East Crockett Streets.
The Alamo Plaza Better Block event will kick off on Aug. 17, 2012 celebrating Davy Crockett's Birthday from 5 to 11 p.m. Stay downtown for a scavenger hunt, food trucks, a special Davy Crockett celebration at the Alamo, historic lantern tours of the Alamo grounds and live music. A unique dining opportunity will begin at 9 p.m. in coordination with Alamo Brewery and the San Antonio Chef's Coalition.
The traditional Better Block event will kick off on Saturday, August 18 at 9 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m. This event will continue the closure of Alamo Street from Crockett to Houston and consist of placemaking and streetscape activities that will include a market, historical and interpretative demonstrations, the launch of a smart device walking tour, food vendors, as well as family friendly games and activities in Plaza de Valero. The walking tour will be available to all visitors beyond the Better Block event. Alamo Street from Crockett to Houston will be closed beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday and remain closed until 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Feedback from this Better Block event will be used to formulate key physical changes to implement as part of the eventual permanent improvements to be made to the plaza. To get involved with the project, or for more information, visit their website.
