Metro Health Assistant Director Selected for National Public Health Leadership Institute

Dr. Bryan Alsip will participate in year-long program as PHLI Scholar

Dr. Bryan Alsip, assistant director of Metro Health, will join an elite group of San Antonians selected as a National Public Health Leadership Institute (PHLI) Scholar. PHLI tapped Dr. Alsip to participate in its 2008 leadership development program. The selection makes him the second City of San Antonio employee to receive this distinguished honor in 17 years, preceded only by Dr. Fernando Guerra, director of Metro Health.

Dr. Guerra, a member of the PHLI inaugural class in 1991, nominated Dr. Alsip for this year's institute. Thus far, only two other health professionals representing our community have participated in the program.

“Bryan is undeniably the caliber of candidate the institute seeks for its program. I am positive he will make significant contributions and gain new insight as a result of interfacing with his fellow scholars,” said Dr. Guerra.

PHLI is a one-year leadership development program for high-potential individuals with a commitment to leading in their own organizations and communities, but also guiding system change on the national scene. Founded and sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the mission of PHLI is to strengthen the leadership competencies of senior public health leaders and to build a network of professionals who can work together and share knowledge on how to address public health challenges.

As a PHLI Scholar, Dr. Alsip will join 49 other scholars in a development experience consisting of action-learning teams. The teams will work on a national priority issue with guidance from a national-level sponsor throughout the year-long program.

“I am humbled and honored to be a part of this selective process,” said Dr. Alsip. “This will be an exciting opportunity to collaborate with other professionals who have established themselves in the public health arena here in the U.S. and across the globe.”

PHLI has trained more than 800 of the nation's top public health leaders since it was created in 1991 and has been a major force in transforming the nation's public health system.
