National Immunization Awareness Month - August

August is recognized as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). The goal of NIAM is to increase awareness about immunizations across the life span, from infants to the elderly.

August is the perfect time to remind family, friends, co-workers, and those in the community to catch up on their vaccinations. Parents are enrolling their children in school, students are entering college, and healthcare workers are preparing for the upcoming flu season.

American Diabetes Month - November

November is American Diabetes Month®—a time to shine a spotlight on a serious disease that leads to potentially life-threatening complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation.

Consider that:

•24 million children and adults in the United States live with diabetes; about 1 in 10 in San Antonio
•57 million Americans are at risk for type 2 diabetes
•1 out of every 3 children born today will face a future with diabetes if current trends continue

Great American Smokeout - November 18

The American Cancer Society is marking the 35th Great American Smokeout on November 18th by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.  Quitting smoking is not easy, but it can be done. To have the best chance of quitting successfully, you need to know what you're up against, what your options are, and where to go for help.

Here in Bexar County, call 1-877-YES-QUIT. Learn more about Metro Health's tobacco prevention efforts.
