The mission of the Food and Environmental Health Services Division is to protect, promote, and aid in the development of an environmentally safe and healthy community for the residents of San Antonio and Bexar County. The division strives to ensure that the residents receive the maximum protection in food sanitation and environmental health.
The Food Sanitation Services team members review and approve construction plans for food establishment facilities within the City of San Antonio.
The division also issues all licenses and inspects all food establishments according to the local health code and State regulations for the City of San Antonio and unincorporated parts of Bexar County.
Metro Health has proposed changes to the local health code, Chapter 13, that addresses food and food handlers. Proposed revisions to the code are as follows:

What else does Food Sanitation Services do?
The division conducts investigations of foodborne illness outbreaks, smoking ordinance violations in food establishments, and other complaints. It also provides inspections of day cares, foster care facilities, nutrition sites, assisted living facilities, special event food booths, and mobile food vending. The division also ensures that all food establishment managers are certified per State regulations.
Food Sanitation team members investigate the aftermath of fires and other disasters (natural or manmade) at food establishments, and order destruction of food or food materials when necessary to protect the public health.
The division also inspects all kitchens in public school cafeterias, hospitals and other medical facilities, and hotel/motels; and enforces the local health codes and State laws, including recording of inspection results, notices of violations, and issuance of citations when necessary to protect the public health.
