Welcome to the First 2010 Edition of Health e-News!
It's a brand new year and the second decade of the new millinneum! How about a new, Texas-sized commitment to make San Antonio and Bexar County one of the healthiest communities in the nation?
Metro Health will be there with you along the journey - sometimes leading the way through new initiatives, projects or recommendations. At other times, San Antonio's public health team will link arm-in-arm with you as a partner lending our special expertise and guidance.
You'll notice the different roles we play as you peruse this first issue of the 2010 edition of Health e-News. From our leadership in response to the novel H1N1 flu pandemic to our many partnerships varying on issues such as pediatric oral health, childhood obesity and teen pregnancy, your public health team is here to protect your safety and improve your quality of life.
To this end, check out one of our award-winning health programs in Dr. Guerra's Corner (see link above). Also, in this issue, don't miss our featured employee of the month. All of our team members bring unique skills and passion to their public service roles and Rico Ripley is inspiring with his commitment to San Antonio, Bexar County, and our country.

First Novel H1N1 Flu Vaccination Clinic Draws Thousands
With the late arrival of sufficient quantities of vaccine to protect this community against the novel H1N1 influenza virus, it was anybody's guess as to how many people would show up for the first community-wide vaccination clinic. Give Kids a Smile
Metro Health and the department's various partners are working to Give Kids a Smile during National Children's Dental Health Month observed throughout February 2010. On February 5, the Dental Division will be at the Ricardo Salinas clinic treating students from various schools identified to be in need of oral health care. Read more...

Lab Improvements Lead to Quicker STD Test Results
The wait for test results for certain sexually transmitted diseases is now a matter of days instead of weeks now that Metro Health is conducting all of its HIV tests in house. New laboratory equipment made this service improvement possible. Read more...

Asthma Action Plan Touted as a CDC Success Story
For three consecutive years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has highlighted a Steps to a Healthier San Antonio Program as a success story. The noted Asthma Action Plan (AAP) is an asthma management and treatment plan for students that Metro Health and the South Texas Asthma Coalition encourages parents to make sure is on file at their child's school. District 5 Councilman David Medina shares his routine...
Councilman Medina believes that maintaining an active lifestyle is important for both the mind and body. In order to stay healthy, he fits four workouts per week into his busy schedule. He begins his fitness routine by stretching before running for 30 minutes. He then hits the punching bag for another half hour and finishes with pushups and sit-ups. On occasion, he gathers friends, family, and co-workers together for a friendly pick-up game of basketball! Councilman Medina encourages residents to participate in fun, physical activities! |

In the Community
Metro Health partnered with the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center for a blood drive to help save lives with the gift of life. On December 28, 2009, and January 4, 2010, Metro Health team members and other City of San Antonio employees rolled up their sleeves and donated 63 units of blood.

In 2007, the Steps to a Healthier San Antonio Program (Steps-SA), in
collaboration with San Antonio ISD and the Southwest School of Art and
Craft, presented "A Healthy Community Through the Eyes of a Child" in
which children from local schools expressed their creative vision of
health concerns and issues affecting their community through the use
of art.
