Immunization Clinical Trials

Photo

Since 1993, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (SAMHD) has collaborated with various healthcare agencies and pharmaceutical companies in conducting clinical research studies on some of the most important new vaccines. These collaborative efforts provide countless health benefits to the community such as higher immunization rates, enhanced community education, and the opportunity to receive more protective levels of immunity through enhanced scientific advancements not currently available at other healthcare sites. The vaccine studies conducted at SAMHD include Phase II and Phase III trials regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Code of Federal Regulations and the International Conference on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) Guidelines.

Current Clinical Trials

Meningitis
Meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. The most common causes of meningitis are viral infections that usually resolve without treatment. However, bacterial infections of the meninges are extremely serious illnesses, and may result in death or brain damage even if treated. Menactra® is a quadrivalent vaccine for protection against invasive meningococcal disease and is currently licensed in the United States for adults and children 2 to 55 years of age. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) also recommends adolescents aged 11 to 18 years and college freshman receive this vaccination. SAMHD is currently conducting a meningitis study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of childhood vaccines typically administered at 12 and 15 months of age when given with two doses of Menactra® at 9 and 12 months of age or when administered without Menactra®. Eligible children must be healthy and 9 or 12 months of age. The study consists of two to three visits over a 12 month period of time. All study participants will receive services at no cost and will be compensated for their time and travel.
