It’s Not Too Late to Get Your Flu Shot
Metro Health reminds community during NIVW that widespread vaccination coverage is best defense
Before influenza season peaks and as the country observes National Influenza Vaccination Week (December 8 – 14), San Antonio residents are reminded that there is still time to get vaccinated during this flu season. Flu virus activity typically peaks in February or March with the number of cases usually starting to rise in January. Nationwide, flu leads to nearly 36,000 deaths and 200,000 people being hospitalized. So, the Metro Health team strongly encourages anyone who did not receive their shot at the beginning of influenza season to get it late rather than never.
“Widespread vaccination efforts are the best defense for our local community. All of us who are able should receive a flu shot to protect ourselves and those with whom we live, play, work, and socialize,” said Director of Health Dr. Fernando Guerra. “We must not forget that influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can be deadly.”
More than 80% of the U.S. population should receive a flu shot per recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, the actual number of people vaccinated falls far short of this goal. Thus, the CDC observes NIVW to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination through December, January, and beyond.
Vaccination efforts by Metro Health cover groups who have an increased risk of influenza infection or complications, including:
- All children ages 6 months to 18 years old
- All persons age 50 or older
- Anyone at risk for medical complications from influenza or more likely to require medical care, i.e. people diagnosed with diabetes, asthma, or HIV/AIDS, as well as those who have recently received radiation or chemotherapy
- All persons who live with or care for persons at high risk, including those who care for children less than 6 months of age
Anyone without a doctor and in the high risk categories can visit one of these Metro Health clinics:
| Ages 6 months and older Main Immunization Clinic 345 W. Commerce 207-8894 |

The vaccination fee is $25. However, children who present a valid Medicaid or CHIP card will not be charged. Other children qualifying for the Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program can receive their flu shot for $10. Medicare Part B and several Medicare supplement plans also will be accepted.
