WHY:             Metro Health’s Tobacco Prevention & Control Program organized this art contest and award ceremony for public and private school students in grades 1-12 to observe the Great American Smokeout in November and promote prevention of tobacco use.  The theme of the 2010 contest was “My Life in a Smoke-free San Antonio.”  Students were asked to portray positive images of how the recently revised City of San Antonio public smoking ordinance will impact the community.

With the help of teachers in schools across Bexar County, more than 500 students submitted artwork.  During the award ceremony, 27 students will be honored as contest winners for their thought-provoking and colorful work.  The winners’ artwork will be featured in a 12-month calendar that will educate the community about the dangers of tobacco use.  Honorees will receive prizes donated by Metro Health and local businesses, including school supplies, gift certificates, movie and bowling passes, and a pizza party package.

VISUALS:     Award-winning artwork exhibits and the 12-month calendar and a visit by The Duck.
