Minor's Consent for Birth Control

Metro Health encourages young people to discuss their birth control needs with their parent or guardian. But some young people are not able to do this. Because of the federal funding we receive, we cannot require parent consent for birth control methods such as pills, patches, or shots.

Young people can consent for their own birth control in this clinic.

In general in Texas, minors (those under age 18) need parental or a guardian's consent to receive medical care, unless they are married, on active military duty, or at least 16 and living independently.

Minors under age 18 also can consent for themselves for the following services:

  • over-the-counter items, such as condoms
  • care for pregnancy (other than abortion)
  • pregnancy test
  • care for a sexually transmitted disease (STD)
  • care for drug use or dependency
  • care for physical, sexual, or emotional abuse
  • counseling to prevent suicide
