The month of May is annually observed as Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. The highlight of the observance is the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, which will take place on May 5, 2010. The purpose of this ninth annual event is to focus the attention of teens on the importance of avoiding teen pregnancy and other serious consequences of sex. On the National Day, teens nationwide are asked to go www.sanantonio.gov/ProjectWORTH and take a short, scenario-based quiz (available in English and Spanish). The online quiz challenges young people to think carefully about what they would do in a number of risky sexual situations.
World No Tobacco Day - May 31
Controlling the epidemic of tobacco among women is an important part of any comprehensive tobacco control strategy. This day is designed to draw particular attention to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing towards women and girls. Women comprise about 20% of the world's more than 1 billion smokers. However, rates of females smoking are on the rise. Especially troubling is the rising prevalence of tobacco use among girls.
