From cardio for seniors to walking classes to circuit training, San Antonio residents will find a myriad of fitness opportunities available at Woodlawn Lake Gym’s new Community Health and Wellness Center, 219 Alexander, beginning on Monday, March 31.
The brainchild of District 7 City Councilman Cris Medina, the Community Health and Wellness Center at Woodlawn Gym will feature classes for seniors offered by the Department of Human Services from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Parks and Recreation Department will provide a variety of fitness classes from 5 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Senior classes will include senior cardio, senior circuit, walking classes, yoga stretch, line dancing, Y Health Chat and Zumba Gold taught by YMCA instructors.
Parks and Recreation classes will include a walking program, circuit training, and High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T.) on Monday evenings. On Wednesday nights, they will host a Teen Night for boys and girls, ages 13 to 17, in the gym with volleyball and basketball skills, including fundamentals and scrimmages. Also on Wednesday night, Univision will continue to sponsor its walking program, Unase Al Reto, in the park near the Island House. H.I.I.T. also will be offered outside near the Island House.
Thursday nights feature a walking program, circuit training and H.I.I.T.
Councilman Medina says he saw an opportunity to maximize the use of this gym space for fitness activities, in addition to its current uses for basketball leagues, boxing, and other sports- related events as well as complementing activities in the park itself.
“We wanted to continue to build on the great fitness opportunities at Woodlawn Lake,” he says. “We have the wonderful walking trail, basketball courts, the dance studio, tennis courts and outdoor fitness equipment. These classes are another way of helping our residents establish regular fitness routines and healthy habits.”
Class offerings may change in the future in keeping with community response and interested participants are invited to visit the Parks and Recreation Department web site at http://www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec/fitness_center.aspx for the latest information.
