SAN ANTONIO (August 20, 2014)—Five area Head Start grantees—City of San Antonio Head Start, AVANCE-San Antonio, Center for New Communities, Family Service Association Head Start and Parent-Child Inc. of San Antonio and Bexar County—will host a half-day pre-service event at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 at the Lila Cockrell Theatre (200 E. Market St.) in preparation for the 2014-2015 school year.
The pre-service program will be attended by Mayor Ivy R. Taylor, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy & Early Learning Dr. Libby Doggett, early childhood specialist Lisa Murphy and approximately 1,400 program staff. This training will provide opportunities for attendees and program staff to increase their Head Start knowledge and skills.
Head Start provides two years of high quality pre-kindergarten education for eligible 3- to 5-year-old children, as well as nutritional, medical, disability, dental and mental health services. The City’s program helps Head Start families overcome barriers to success through comprehensive family services including job training, adult education assistance and financial literacy education. To qualify for services with the City of San Antonio’s Head Start program, children must reside in the school district boundaries of either Edgewood or San Antonio Independent School Districts. Enrollment is determined based on income eligibility and categorical status. The program gives priority placement to children who are homeless and/or have a disability. The 2014-2015 City of San Antonio Head Start program will operate in 27 Head Start education centers and serve 3,020 children.
