Relief efforts suspend donations of materials

Federal, state, and city officials and private relief organizations running San Antonio’s hurricane relief efforts said today they are not accepting any new material donations but, rather, encourage support in the form of cash.

Officials said so many people have donated material goods – from toys to bedding to clothing – that they no longer have the staff and storage capabilities to continue receiving merchandise. Most donations have been made to the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.

People wishing to make monetary contributions are encouraged to do so through their favorite charity or the San Antonio Hurricane Relief Effort Fund, c/o San Antonio Area Foundation, 110 Broadway, Suite 230, San Antonio, TX 78205 or online at www.saafdn.org.

Today’s decision regarding donations was made by a new executive board, formed this week to support the city’s Hurricane Katrina relief activities. Members of the executive board represent the city of San Antonio, Bexar County, the state of Texas, the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, and private relief organizations.
