HISTORY

"The City of San Antonio Library system will partner with Reagan High School's library to make this a prized facility used by Reagan students and staff as well as the community!"

An unprecedented cooperative venture between a school district and the City of San Antonio swung into full operation Sunday, October 10, at 12:45 p.m. The Library of Ronald Reagan High School jointly operated by the North East Independent School District and the City of San Antonio Public Library Department, was opened by officials from both entities. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony there was an open house until 6:00 p.m. The public joined the opening festivities, and borrowed books from the public library collection.

The joint School District - City pilot project was first proposed by former District 9 Councilman Tim Bannwolf, who saw it as an opportunity to provide library services to a previously under-served area while saving operating costs. "By housing a public library in a school library facility, taxpayers save more than three million dollars," said Bannwolf. "The library opening means that the 30,000 residents of this area now have convenient access to services in their own neighborhood." Bannwolf added that, until the opening of the Reagan High School Library, residents in its vicinity would have had to travel 8 miles to the Brook Hollow Branch Library or 12 miles to the Ed Cody Branch Library.
