  1. Meet the Computer
    Learn the basics about computer parts and care and develop mouse skills. No computer experience is necessary.
  2. Windows Desktop
    This class covers the basics of saving and opening files and computer file management. Also learn how to run multiple programs at one time and practice your mouse skills. Computer experience is required. If you need practice using the mouse, attend Meet the Computer before this class.
  3. Web Basics
    Discover the wealth of knowledge available on the World Wide Web! Learn the basics of Web addressing, navigating your browser and following links. Also learn about Web safety, online privacy, and website evaluation. Computer experience is necessary.
  4. Search the Web
    Learn about subject directories, search engines, search tips and your list of results. Also explore advanced search engine strategies such as phrase searching, Boolean operators, image and domain searching. Web knowledge is required.
  5. E-mail I
    Start e-mailing family and friends! Students will register for an account and learn how to send e-mails. Web knowledge is required.
  6. E-mail II
    Learn how to use e-mail features such as attachments, folders and address books. Other topics include dealing with spam, using emoticons and e-mail dos and don'ts, sending e-cards and signing up for newsletters and mailing lists. Web knowledge and an active, free web-based e-mail account is required.

Look for these classes at a later date.

  1. Word I
    Discussion of editing tools in Microsoft Word to create a basic document. Bring a diskette if you would like to save your work. Computer experience is required. If you need practice using the mouse, attend Meet the Computer before this class.
  2. Word II
    Learn how to modify a basic document using advanced tools in Microsoft Word. Bring a diskette if you would like to save your work. Word experience is required.
  3. Excel I
    Create a basic spreadsheet and learn how to perform basic operations in Microsoft Excel. Bring a diskette if you would like to save your work. Computer experience is required. If you need practice using the mouse, attend Meet the Computer before this class.
  4. Excel II
    Begin using some advanced features of Microsoft Excel, such as creating graphs and charts. Bring a diskette if you would like to save your work. Excel experience is required.

GENEALOGY CLASSES
To register for these classes in advance, call (210) 207-2500 and ask for the Texana Department.

Basic Genealogy Websites
A Core group of genealogy websites will be examined. Among them: Cyndi's List, Ellis Island, Family Search, Heritage Quest, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Rootsweb and the US Genweb Project. Some computer and Internet required.

Beginning Genealogy: the Internet as a Source for Genealogical Research
Discover how to make the best use of the Internet in genealogical research. Learn how to evaluate genealogy web sites. You will visit how-to and other major sites, and learn how to download blank forms. Some computer and Internet experience would be helpful.

Genealogy Resources
Discussion of the importance of locating primary sources when doing research. Visit websites that have a variety of primary sources (i.e. actual records, not transcriptions) or have links to sites containing primary sources that are available for use by researchers. Computer and Internet experience is required.

Heritage Quest Online
Heritage Quest Online provides access to United States census images, family and county histories, an index to genealogical periodicals, and scanned images of Revolutionary War pension applications. This class will look at the best search techniques for these databases, printing from them, using Interlibrary Loan, and alternative sources of similar information. Some computer and internet experience will be helpful.

Secrets of Heritage Quest Online
This site provides access to U.S. census records, family and country histories, indexing for genealogical magazines, and Revolutionary War pension applications. Discussion will include the best search techniques to use, how to print from the databases, and how to use Interlibrary Loan when necessary. Some computer and Internet experience is preferred.

Passenger Lists
Individual sites containing background information on passenger lists will be discussed. Sites containing transcriptions of lists will be discussed and viewed. Site evaluation will also be covered. Computer knowledge is required.
