SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2002
This
summer all children, ages birth to age 12, who use the San Antonio Public
Library are invited to "Be an American Hero—Read!" and participate in the
Summer Reading Program 2002. Here’s how the program works: Parents are
encouraged to bring their children to any San Antonio Public Library
location to sign up and receive a reading log. In this log, the amount of
time a child spends listening to someone read to them or reading by
themselves is recorded. When the child has listened or read for 5, 10 and
or 15 hours total, the log can be returned to any library location, to
receive some well-earned rewards. For 5 hours total reading or listening,
the child has earned a certificate. For 10 hours total, the child has
earned a sew-on patch. For 15 hours total, he/she has earned a backpack.
And it doesn’t matter what you read! Books, newspaper and magazine
articles, even Internet articles are some possibilities. Children are
invited to expand their reading and/or listening repertoires and try
something new. And the whole family can get involved. Start some family
reading nights and the children in a family can earn their rewards all at
the same time! The program starts on June 1st and continues
through July 31st. On July 27th, from 9:00 AM to
12:00 noon, children and their families are invited to "Book Bash: A
Celebration of Heroes in the Park" which will take place at Rosedale Park
at 340 Dartmouth. Musical entertainment, games, crafts, police and
firefighter demonstrations are just some of the things planned for
everyone’s enjoyment. See you this summer at the library!
And
don’t forget about Youth Wired’s Teen Reading Program! Entitled,
Leonardo 2002, the theme is so named because this year is
the 550th anniversary of the birth of Leonardo da Vinci. The
theme is also appropriate because the number 2002 is a palindrome, meaning
it reads the same forward or backward, and Leonardo was famous for his
"secret" writing, which turned out to be mirror writing.
The opening party is at Central on June 1 at 1:00 and includes
lowriders, mehndi tattoos, greyhounds, ponies, juggling, oldies music,
belly dancers, and much more.
Call or visit your local library to see all the other
exciting events scheduled for teens this summer. You can check
Youth Wired’s web page
sometime in June for a listing of events. |

Books
in Print
Remember
when you had to use a huge hardbound reference volume to find out what
books were currently available from publishers? Books in Print used to
be a multivolume set, divided by Publisher, Subject, Title and Author. The
books were huge, the type was tiny, and the information was quickly
outdated.
Fortunately, it is now available as an online database. The information is
quickly updated, quick and easy to research, and even features videos and
audio cassettes. You can search by genre, author, title, subject, and even
format. As with the traditional Books In Print, it offers you every
edition of each title, so you will know if your favorite title is
available in paperback, large print or regular hardbound. Of course, the
ISBN and price is included in the information. Best of all, you can be as
vague or specific as you want in your search, so if you can’t quite
remember the title, Books In Print can still help you. Or if you
want the movie "Little Women" but only the Winona Ryder version, no
problem! Just tell Books in Print exactly what you want, and it’ll find it
quickly and accurately. Try it at your
local library. And remember, if you find any database confusing
to use, just ask your librarian for help. |

Juneteenth
is a holiday well known to African Americans living in Texas.
Traditionally observed on June 19th, it commemorates the
day when Texas slaves were finally and officially freed. There are
several web sites dedicated to Juneteenth:

Juneteenth, a listing of organizations, and even a store for related
items you can buy.

Juneteenth: Freedom Revisited - This site was created by the
Anacostia Museum. The museum is a auxiliary of the Smithsonian and
focuses on African American history and culture. The museum itself
is located in Washington D.C. but celebrates African American
culture all across the country.
-
History of Juneteenth - A strong
focus on history and facts, this is an excellent starting point
for reports and study of Juneteenth. It includes additional links and
plenty of information.
-
Juneteenth: U.S.A. Holiday -
This site is sponsored by Texas State
Representative Al Edwards and has an emphasis on Texas,
which is where Juneteenth originated. There is also information on promoting Juneteenth
and making it even better known and more widely celebrated.
