SAN ANTONIO
PUBLIC LIBRARY CENTENNIAL
1903-2003: 100 Years of Service to San Antonio
In 1903, with an endowment from the Andrew Carnegie
Foundation, a group of public-spirited San Antonians founded the San Antonio
Public Library.
In 2003, the Library will celebrate its 100th year
of providing books, storytimes, movies, newspapers, magazines, tapes, CDs,
computer access, and answers to questions to the citizens of San Antonio and
Bexar County. The San Antonio Public Library Foundation, the
Friends of the San
Antonio Public Library, and the Library staff have a big year planned.
The Library’s birthday celebration will actually kick off this month, with the unveiling of the Centennial poster. The poster,
sponsored by the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library and created by San
Antonio artist Clif Tinker, captures the spirit of San Antonio along with the
essence of the Library. Tuesday, November 12, the poster will premiere at a
reception in the Central Library Auditorium. The event will be open to the
public, and at that time posters will go on sale, $10.00 for an unsigned poster
and $50.00 for one signed by the artist. This limited-edition work will be on
sale only during 2003, so be sure to get yours early. The Friends of the San
Antonio Public Library centennial poster is a great holiday gift idea – and
don’t forget that proceeds from sales will go to support the Library!
In January 2003, the Mayor and City Council will proclaim
2003 the Year of the Library and the celebration will swing into full gear.
The Library Foundation has a full slate of events planned. In
January, the Foundation will kick off "Born to Read," a project to make sure
that every baby born in Bexar County throughout 2003 receives a kit containing
reading tips for the new parents, a Library card application, a book and a
certificate proclaiming, "I was born to read in the Year of the Library." Other
projects planned by the Foundation include "Discover the Library – Explore Your
World," a series of presentations by famous explorers including chimpanzee
researcher Jane Goodall, astronaut Storey Musgrave, and underwater explorer
Sylvia Earle. The explorers’ appearances will be open to the public and
admission will be free with a San Antonio Public Library card. In June, the
Foundation will present its "birthday gift" to the Library – an original
sculpture by glass artist Dale Chihuly.
Look for exciting events all year long at your Library: a
San Antonio movie festival, art exhibits, a celebration of Library Champions, a
bike race and more. And on Sunday, June 15, at the Central Library, the whole
city is invited to the Library’s birthday party, with entertainment and, of
course, birthday cake!
Check the Library’s web page
or the newspaper for details and exact event dates. Come help us celebrate our
first century and kick off our second!

eBOOKS
Have you ever used our catalog and come across the term
"e-book" or "netLibrary?" This is because San Antonio Public Library has access
to over 20,000 electronic books! They were purchased for us by the Texas State
Library and are provided through the web-based service, netLibrary. Included in
these 20,000 are many literary classics such as The Scarlet Letter and
Huckleberry Finn, as well as Cliffs and Bloom’s Notes for these books. There
are also thousands of non-fiction books on subjects such as computers, business,
health, careers and more. Last month alone, San Antonio Public Library patrons
checked out 17 business, economics and management titles a total of 72 times.
Other popular items available for checkout are the computer books published by
O’Reilly. These titles include Perl in a Nutshell, HTML: the
Definitive Guide, Java in a Nutshell, Palm Pilot: the Ultimate
Guide, and MP3: the Definitive Guide. Legal guides are also popular.
Titles by Nolo Press, for example, include 101 Law Forms for Personal Use,
How To Win Your Personal Injury Claim, Nolo’s Simple Will Book,
and The Small Business Start-Up Kit.
There are three main ways to access netLibrary and the book
you want.
- To access netLibrary for the first time, start at
our homepage. Click on "E-Library," click on "E-Books," and the instructions to sign
up are there (you’ll need a valid library card.) It is similar to signing up
for a free e-mail account and takes only about 3 minutes. Once you have a
logon ID, you can access netLibrary and search by title, author, subject,
keyword, publisher and/or ISBN.
- If you begin in the San Antonio Public Library catalog and
find an e-book record, all you have to do is click the hyperlink in the URL
field. You will be taken straight to netLibrary and to the book you want.
- If you would like to search the San Antonio Public Library
catalog for an e-book specifically, just enter the term "netLibrary," along
with your subject, into the keyword space. When the titles come up, go into
the record, click on the hyperlink in the URL field and you will be taken
straight to the book you want. You can then either browse through the book or
check it out for a 24-hour period.
Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, e-books are
free and a great way to do book research either from the library or from home. They are
full text searchable and when you find the information you need, you can cut and
paste right into your own document. There’s also a dictionary and a place for
notes. Whether you go into your local library to use netLibrary, or access it
though the web, you will be glad you did!

limit media type to DVD. Click "Search." You can even enter a director's or actor’s name in
the Author or Name space.
They’re checking out extremely fast so if your title is not available, simply place a hold on it (in
