THE
INTERNATIONAL COLLECTION AT THE CENTRAL LIBRARY
Bonjour!
Guten Tag! Konnichi wa! If you can read a language other than English and
Spanish, as either a native speaker or a student of that language, the
International Collection is for you. Currently housed on the first floor
of the Central Library, snuggled between the Spanish books and the
audiotapes, the International Collection includes fiction and non-fiction
books written in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean,
Portuguese, Russian, and Vietnamese with a few in Hebrew and Polish. As
with other materials in the Public Library system, you can request that
these books be sent to branches for convenient pickup. The call number of
each of these items begins with the name of the language (in English), so
to find these items in the Library catalog, try a call number search
beginning with the name of the language (e.g. "FRENCH," "JAPANESE," etc.).
You can also find them by author or title, but keep in mind that the
Russian and Asian language materials are cataloged using Romanization of
the native scripts. The collection started out as an assortment of gift
books in Western European languages donated by library users, but has
expanded in recent years to include new acquisitions and the addition of
Asian language titles. The International Collection is meant to reflect
the growing ethnic and linguistic diversity in the community of San
Antonio. Spread the word among your fellow language speakers, sample what
we have, and by all means submit your requests for more!

MYSTERY READER?
 Even
for the most avid mystery readers, finding the right mystery is anything but
elementary. There are times when we all wish we could draw on some of Mr.
Poirot's "little grey cells" in addition to our own. So if you can’t
quite figure out what to read next, San Antonio Public Library can help. With
our fiction database, Novelist, there are many ways to choose your next
"who-done-it."
CHARACTER NAME – These searches should be done in the "Find a Series"
section. Type in "Lincoln Rhyme" or "Stephanie Plum" in order to retrieve
titles in Jeffery Deaver's and Janet Evanovich's popular mystery series.
Type in "Sherlock Holmes" to find a list of the approximately 250 books
that feature this sophisticated sleuth. Whether you’re looking for a
forgotten title early in a series or you want to see what’s next in the
series, this is a great place to start.
GENDER - Over the past several years, many titles have introduced
detectives who are women. While male detectives like Spenser and
Robicheaux are still around, they are sharing the space under the
streetlight with the likes of Kinsey Millhone and Blanche White. Type in
"Women Detectives" in the "Describe a Plot" section.
SETTING – This search should be done in the "Describe a Plot" section. Want to find a mystery set in San Antonio? Simply type "Mystery San
Antonio" and get a list that includes Rick Riordan’s "The Last King of
Texas" and Carolyn Hart’s "Death on the Riverwalk." Want murder in
Mississippi? You’ll find John Grisham’s "The Summons" and Elmore Leonard’s
"Tishomingo Blues."
AWARDS – In the "Mysteries and Thrillers" section of "Best Fiction,"
there are browsable lists of award winning mysteries. Some of the lists
are the "Agatha Award" and the "Edgar Allan Poe," and include titles such
as Sharyn McCrumb’s "If I’d Killed Him When I Met Him" and Joe R.
Lansdale’s "The Bottoms."
Visit your
local library and solve the mystery of what you’d like to
read next. Ask your library staff for help. You can also access Novelist
from home using your valid library card. |
