Dr.
Jane Goodall began her landmark study of chimpanzees in Tanzania’s Gombe
Stream National Park in 1960, under the mentorship of Dr. Louis Leakey. At
Gombe, she began what would become her life’s work. Her heart never left:
Dr. Goodall’s relationship with Gombe’s chimpanzees — whom she insisted on
studying by name and not by number — evolved into a genuine affection and
passionate commitment to their survival. Today, Dr. Goodall spends most of
her time touring, speaking to groups of all ages about our responsibility
to respect and preserve the planet's wild places. In our special evening
with Dr. Goodall, she will share her insights from a lifetime of study of
one unique species, and how it evolved into her passionate advocacy for
all living creatures.
Dr. Goodall will also participate in a special School Outreach Program,
provided by Region 20 Education Service Center, designed to bring the
"discovery experience" to the students of San Antonio and South Texas via
interactive distance learning and other new technologies.
The goal of the Library Foundation’s Explorers Series
is to present the world’s most daring explorers to San Antonio, sparking
inspiration among our students and encouraging them to explore the world
through the library system.
Other sponsors include: The Alameda National Center for
Latino Arts and Culture, IMAX Theatre, The Smothers-Bruni Foundation,
Region 20 Education Service Center, The San Antonio Education Partnership,
Hilton Palacio del Rio, Goldsbury Foundation, Karen and Tim Hixon, Girl
Scouts of the San Antonio Area, Members of the Texas Chapter of the
Explorers Club and the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre.
