GIVE A GIFT FROM THE LIBRARY

As we wind up 2003, thanks for helping make our 100th Birthday Celebration the greatest! We look forward to another 100 years serving the community.

For this year and years to come, don’t forget that the best gift a parent can give a child is the gift of reading. If your children don’t have San Antonio Public Library cards, take some quiet time during the busy holidays to visit your local Library and get cards for your whole family, then check out some good holiday reading, music or movies. They’re all available at the Library.

Or if you are looking for gifts to buy, don’t forget the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library Book Cellar Used Book Store on the lower level of the Central Library, 600 Soledad. A limited edition Library Centennial poster would be perfect for everyone on your list. They’re on special end-of-Centennial sale at $5 unsigned or $25 signed and numbered. You’ll also find everything from best sellers to antique or rare books to art books to children’s books, all at great prices. You can finish off your whole shopping list, stay within your budget, and help the Library – all proceeds from Book Cellar sales go to support Library programs. (And pick up a couple of presents for yourself.) Don’t forget the once-only Centennial T-shirts available at the Central Library check-out desk.

Finally, give yourself a gift. Are you planning to buy a computer this holiday season? Do you already have a home computer, but you’re not sure you’re getting all you could from it? (After all, you could play solitaire with real cards.) Check out our free computer classes! Many are offered at convenient Branch Library locations and more are available at the Central Library. You can start with the basics or find out how to surf the Internet or open an e-mail account, all at no charge. Computer classes are also offered in Spanish. For a list of classes pick up a computer calendar at any Branch or call 207-2500 and ask for computer training information.

PUT WINGS ON YOUR IMAGINATION!

Young PegasusDon’t forget that December 31 is the deadline for Young Pegasus poetry entries. In 1927, the Young Pegasus Poetry Contest, a writing competition for young people from preschool to high school, was introduced in San Antonio. For more than 75 years, the San Antonio Public Library has invited all the city’s poets eighteen years of age or younger to submit their original work. Entries are now being accepted for the 2002 competition. Your poem could appear in the next Young Pegasus Poetry Anthology!

The deadline for submission is December 31, 2003. Young poets can enter online at www.sanantonio.gov/library, take their work to their nearest branch library, or deliver or send it to:

San Antonio Public Library
ATTN: Young Pegasus Competition
600 Soledad, 4th Floor
San Antonio, Texas 78205

If entries are mailed, they should be postmarked by midnight, December 31.
Winning poems will be published in the annual Young Pegasus Anthology, and the authors recognized at an awards ceremony, where each winning poem is read publicly by one of the judges’ panel.

Dr. Amy Freeman Lee, artist and educator, serves as the chair for the panel of contest judges.

For additional information, please call 207-2621, check our website at www.sanantonio.gov/library, or go by any Library location. Then put wings on your imagination and start writing!

INFANT LAPSIT

Father playing with child.Infant Lapsit is a program that is specially designed to benefit our youngest library patrons. Infant lapsit storytimes encourage development of language and motor skills by incorporating books with simple songs, rhymes and fingerplays.

According to Linda Ernst*, author of Lapsit Services for the Very Young II, lapsit programs are "valuable introductions to the wonderful world of language in which the very young child and adult together share a fun, learning experience that they will then want to recreate."

In an effort to encourage early literacy and to model reading skills to adult caregivers, several SAPL locations are now offering Infant Lapsit storytimes. These include: Central Library, Brook Hollow, Forest Hills and Johnston. Other branches are scheduled to begin lapsit programs in January 2004.

Infant lapsit storytimes are a wonderful way to introduce babies to books. With this introduction, we hope that participants will make books and libraries an integral part of their lives!

REDUCING SPAM

Stop Spam!Unsolicited commercial e-mail, commonly called "spam" or junk e-mail not only clutters our inboxes, but can also invade our lives with unwanted messages that may even deceive or disgust us. The flow of unsolicited commercial e-mail can be slowed with advanced filtering and other new technology, but curbing spam also requires the combined action of computer users, industries, and government. You can take these steps to help decrease your exposure to unwelcome messages:

  • Ignore spam. Spammers often combine names randomly with popular e-mail services (for example, MSN® Hotmail®, AOL, and Yahoo!) in hopes of finding valid e-mail addresses. By responding to the junk e-mail, even to unsubscribe, you may be inadvertently verifying that the message has reached a working e-mail address. Unless you are unsubscribing from a distribution list that you signed up for or you know the sender of the message, discard it without responding.
  • Don't buy anything promoted in SPAM/Junk mail
  • Don't post your e-mail address on public web pages, unless your business process necessitates it
  • Don't use your e-mail address in chat rooms
  • Don't disclose your e-mail address to a web site without checking its privacy policy (These policies are usually easily found as a link on the Web page. If there isn’t one, don’t assume your e-mail address will be kept private.)
  • Don't forward chain letters, petitions, or virus warnings
  • Ignore and delete any SPAM/Junk e-mail you receive immediately without opening it

SHOP SMART ONLINE

Interested in shopping online this holiday season? Follow some easy steps to insure that your online transaction is safe and fun!

  1. Start with a reputable store that you are familiar with. All your favorite major stores also have websites you can purchase from.
  2. Check for extra fees, warranties, return shipping and handling policies. It is also helpful to have a store phone number if you have questions.
  3. Read the privacy policy outlining what personal data the company collects and how it will be used.
  4. Always make online purchases with credit cards since they are protected by federal law from unauthorized charges. A debit card does not offer the same protection.
  5. Once you complete your online transaction, print out your confirmation page which usually includes the total amount to be paid and a confirmation number you will need if any questions arise.
  6. For more information, visit www.safeshopping.org.

This information and more is available on handouts used during the SAPL’s Web Basics II class. Check the online calendar for dates and times.
