SUMMER READING
PROGRAM BEGINS JUNE 1ST
This summer, grab your
sunscreen and a book, head for the beach or your hammock, and join the
San Antonio Public Library on a virtual round-the-world vacation,
visiting all seven continents as we go! This year even adults can join
the fun as we introduce our first-ever adult Summer Reading Club.
Cruise
Your Library New in 2004!
(For high school ages and up)
The San Antonio Public Library is proud to introduce our first Summer
Reading Club for adults. The Cruise Your Library program invites adults to
explore their world by reading a book about each continent. Upon
registration, a reading log will be assigned along with a cruise ticket.
Participants may read one book per week for a raffle entry to receive
exotic prize baskets. Once participants complete all seven continents by
July 21st, they can enter a drawing for a grand prize!
Extreme
Summer
(For teens ages 13 to 18, or students entering 6th grade)
Sign up beginning June 1st and receive a passport to summer
adventure without ever leaving San Antonio! Take a virtual trip around the
world, participating in extreme sports along the way – surf the Great Barrier
Reef in Australia, climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, raft the Amazon in
South America. Teens will keep track of the continents they visit with
their Extreme Summer passport and collect prizes as they go.
Libro
Sails the Seven Seas
(For children of any age)
Children enrolled in the Summer Reading Program will receive a
treasure map that will serve as a guide as kids read around the world,
visiting each continent, all while collecting their pirate’s loot along
the way!
General Information
Join in the fun! Starting June 1st, registration for all
three Summer Reading Programs can be completed online at
http://www.sanantonio.gov/library or at any library. For all reading
programs, continents can be completed in any order, and libraries will
have booklists recommending round-the-world reading for each level. All
awards are available while supplies last.

Summer Reading Programs. Check out the library’s Events page at

BOOK CLUBS |
|
 Ever
since Oprah started her book club in 1996 there has been a reading
renaissance. The popularity of book clubs has reached an all time high.
There are online book clubs, media book clubs, special interest book clubs
and more than 200,000 people in the Oprah Book Club. People have been
discovering what we librarians always knew: when you love to read, a
thought provoking discussion about a book just makes the experience that
much more enjoyable.
For anyone wishing to facilitate a book club a large
number of resources are now available. Paz and Associates produce an
annual publication called Reading Group Choices which summarizes
recommendations, offers author biographies, and provides a list of
discussion questions. Diana Tixier Herald publishes Genreflecting, 5th
ed. to help readers find authors that write adult popular literature
in particular styles such as action, adventure or historical mystery.
Online help is even better. In addition to our own database "Novelist",
group leaders can find reader’s advisory on
www.amazon.com,
www.bookmovement.com, and
www.ala.org.
San Antonio Public Library offers 23 Discussion Groups.
The titles being read by each group and the meeting times are available
from our web page
Focus
Fiction: Discussion Groups. Conducting a book club is one more way
that we can create interaction between libraries and neighborhoods. It
allows avid readers to make new friends and promotes lifelong learning by
taking the discussion of literature into the community. Join one today! |
