SPY WARE
Want to protect your home computer? Spam and viruses are not the only
things to worry about, a new type of software called spyware can be even
more damaging, and you might not even know it has been installed on your
computer.
Spyware is software, unknowingly installed on your computer, that is
capable of sending information to a third party without your permission or
knowledge. Sometimes the information that spyware is collecting is as
simple as what pages you visit, but it can also collect and pass on highly
personal information including user names and passwords.
Spyware can get installed on your computer in a number of ways.
Sometimes clicking on a link that appears genuine may in fact install
spyware. Spyware may try to get you to install it by appearing as a title
bar, and the action of closing it could trigger the installing process.
But the most common way to inadvertently download spyware is by
downloading legitimate free software, called freeware, online. For example
if you have installed any free file sharing program (like Kaaza), then it
is possible that while downloading the freeware program, you also
installed a spyware program.
You may have spyware on your computer if you have downloaded any file
sharing programs in the past, or noticed your computer’s performance
slowing down. Other signs that you have spyware installed in your computer
could be that your homepage has changed, or your default search page
appears as something new.
The best remedy is prevention. If you are new to the computing world
and want to be safe, be sure you only download software from reputable
companies. Read the fine print and all privacy notices. You may also want
to install a pop-up blocker to avoid pop-ups. Make sure you have
up-to-date virus software. The newest versions of Norton Antivirus 2004,
McAfee VirusScan and Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2004 all now scan for some
spyware. Some ISPs also now can help keep spyware at bay, check with your
ISP for more information.
If you think that your computer may have spyware installed on it, don’t
worry. There are several different software types that can scan and remove
any spyware. A few of these programs are even free. Check out www.cnet.com
or www.microsoft.com for reviews of these programs and more information. |
