A New Year, A New Look...

Millennium CatalogYou may have noticed some changes at SAPL lately.
In late December 2004, the San Antonio Public Library started using a new automated library system used for circulation and to search for materials. The software, called Millennium, is from library software designer and manufacturer Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III) and will make your library transactions a little easier.

The new Millennium OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) will allow users to not only search the library catalog but also databases, and the Internet from the same window from home or at the library. The enhanced catalog allows customers to see book covers, summaries, tables of contents, and reviews online prior to checking out the item. Catalog information will include not only the branch where an item may be found, but also in what section of the branch (for example, “adult fiction” or “children’s books.”) Users will even be able to limit searches to only items available at their own branches, or only items that may be checked out. Anyone with access to the OPAC will also be able to check their account information, including holds places, items checked out and will be able to place holds. Other advantages provided by the new system include email notification when reserved items can be picked up, and when checked-out materials are overdue.

If you need help using the new system, don’t hesitate to ask! Some of the branches will be offering a free class on how to use the new OPAC in January, so check the class schedule for one near you.

A Day To Serve

Photo: Martin Luther King, Jr. Text: Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On...Not a Day OffMartin Luther King Jr. Day January 17th, 2004. Some people call it a day on instead of a day off, which is how Martin Luther King Jr. might have wanted it. A day spent participating in community service is a day to reconnect with history, meet new people, enhance our bonds with our community and honor the legacy left by Dr. King. Take a few moments to read (or reread) about this legacy and its lasting impact on our country even today.

FEATURED DATABASE

Logo: Auto Repair Reference Center
AUTO REPAIR REFERENCE CENTER

If you’re tired of paying for car repair or just enjoy tinkering with cars, we’ve got a new database that might help you. It is called Auto Repair Reference Center and it provides clear concise repair information for both professionals and do-it-yourselfers. The reputable and well-known publisher of the Chilton’s Auto Repair books provides the content. Popular topics in the database include Repair Procedures, Service Bulletins and Recalls, Wiring Diagrams, Maintenance Intervals, and Labor Cost Estimates. Simply start by choosing the year of your car, then the model, and then the sub-model and engine type. The most popular choice is Repair Procedures, which is divided into the different parts of your automobile. Examples are Engine Electrical, Chassis Electrical, Drive Train, Steering and Suspension and Brakes. Each section is illustrated and provides easy to understand instructions. Auto Repair Reference Center also has a Care & Repair Tips section, which is a great beginner’s crash course in cars and car repair. Care & Repair Tips breaks the automobile down into all its parts and explains in detail, the basic functions of each. In addition, the database has informative sections on how to buy a car, ways to save fuel, motor vehicle emergencies, and a glossary. You can access this database at any San Antonio Public Library or from home at www.mysapl.org.
