E-Mail
Notification
The
San Antonio Public Library has the new Millennium Catalog system up
and running for both staff and library customers. One of the new
features of this catalog is the ability to select the option to
receive library notices via email. In the past, the library sent
out notices indicating that materials placed on hold
were ready for pick up. Notices for overdue materials were also sent through the
postal mail. Now, if you have an active email account that you regularly
check, you may add this email to your library account and start
receiving the email notifications. If you opt to add your email you
will no longer receive the paper notices. You may add your email at
any circulation desk at any of the library branches, or through our
website by selecting ‘My
Library Account’. Accessing your personal library information
through our website allows you to add or edit your phone number or
email. Save this new information and the next notice you receive
will be of the virtual kind!

Troubleshooting
Newsletter viewing
It has come to
our attention that some people receiving our e-mail newsletter are having
trouble seeing some of the included images. We send our newsletter using
Microsoft Outlook 2000 with pointers to pictures, instead of including
them in the e-mail message. We do this to cut down the size of the e-mail
and to allow it to be sent without attachments. If you do not have access
to the Internet location where the image is located you may see a
red x in place of the picture or the
alternate text.
Other Concerns
- Make sure the
library's newsletter is not seen as SPAM by your e-mail provider.
Most e-mail providers now provide options to block all images, no images
or only images in messages seen as spam.
- Many e-mail
programs understand HTML messages, but some do not—we have no way of
knowing what type of e-mail each of our subscribers use. Additionally on
its way to you our newsletter could be routed through an e-mail server
that doesn't support HTML and lose its formatting.
- Set to receive
e-mail in HTML format—your e-mail may be set to text only or
Rich Text Format, which will strip out the formatting provided by
HTML.
- AOL users may
have problems viewing our newsletter. For more information visit
Postmaster.Info: HTML Email or
Webmaster.Info
HTML Email.

Celebrate Groundhog
Day
"Six
more weeks of winter."
That will be the prediction if the groundhog sees
his shadow on February 2nd, Groundhog Day. For those of us who live in
south Texas, the prediction might not mean too much in terms of
temperature, but the legend lives on everywhere. The official groundhog of
Groundhog Day is Punxsutawney Phil located on Gobbler's Knob in
Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Every year since 1887, Phil emerges on Feb 2nd
to predict whether or not the weather will stay cool or warm up in the
coming month. The legend has even older roots, being brought to
Pennsylvania from early German settlers. Today, Groundhog Day and its
predictions and history continue to be celebrated in Punxsutawney and
elsewhere in the United States. Don’t forget to check out your shadow on
February 2nd and check out some books for your children to get familiar
with the groundhog and its special day.

CPS Mailing San Antonio's 21st Century Libraries:
Investing in Every Mind
Inserted in all
February CPS bills.
In 1985, the Library Foundation partnered
with City Public Service (CPS) to introduce a direct mail fundraising
campaign to the community. With over half-a-million envelopes being mailed
city-wide, the CPS campaign is the Foundation's largest grass-roots
fundraising campaign. CPS underwrites the cost of printing and inserting
the envelopes. Contributions can be mailed at any time and can be for any
amount. Funds help the Library Foundation's work to add books, materials
and technology to our Library system. Every dollar contributed celebrates
the Library's success of the past and assures its dreams for the future.
