GO WILD
ABOUT READING!
For
the month of March, the San Antonio Public Library has teamed up
with Mr. Puppet to get kids "Wild About Reading."
Mr. Puppet—real name Bob
Abdou, from Austin—has performed to enthusiastic audiences at
libraries and schools across the country.
Visit one of San
Antonio Public Library's locations to meet zany characters like the
Official Texas State Dinosaur and Stinky, the possum who thinks he
is an elephant. Mr. Puppet, along with these friends and others,
will have kids laughing out loud as they learn all about the library
and the fun of reading. After the show, don't' forget to pick up a
collectible trading card!
All performances are
free and open to the public, but seating is limited and tickets will
be required for admission. Free tickets will be available at each
library location two weeks prior to the performance date.

The Canary Islands in
San Antonio
On Sunday,
March 13, San Antonio celebrates the 274th Anniversary of the arrival of
sixteen families from the Canary Islands to what was then called Villa de
San Fernando.
After the 10:00 a.m. mass at San Fernando Cathedral everyone is invited to
a Fandango, a typical Canary Islander party from early colonial times.
At the request of King
Philip V of Spain, sixteen families from the Canary Islands arrived on
March 9, 1731, at the Presidio de Bexar to establish the first civil
settlement in this area. Upon their arrival these same families formed the
first civil government and became our first mayors and councilmen. As the
days passed the settlers felt a need for a place of worship and began to
plan a church where they could place the image of Our Lady of Candelaria.
The church would be named San Fernando and eventually become a cathedral.
Today it is the oldest continuously operated parish in the United States.
During the month of March,
visit the Central Library's 6th floor to view the display of books donated
by the Hon. Francisco Aznar Vallejo, Vice Council for Exterior Action and
Institutional Relations, Government of the Canary Islands. |
Irish
American Heritage Month
St. Patrick's Day
Green
and gold, shamrocks and luck, St. Patrick’s Day has come to
celebrate all things associated Ireland. This March 17th put on some
green and hope for a little bit of the Irish luck, even if you
aren’t Irish! Because so many Americans celebrate their Irish
lineage in March, Congress declared March Irish-American Heritage
Month in 1995.
