Science Fiction &
Fantasy
Asimov,
Heinlein, Clarke, McCaffrey, Tolkien, Lackey, Salvatore, Jordan & more!
Science fiction and fantasy lovers, San Antonio Public Library system
now has 2 book groups for you.
Members of the Central Library Science Fiction/Fantasy book group agree on
a science fiction or fantasy novel, read the book, and then meet once a
month to discuss what they’ve read. It’s a chance to meet with people who
enjoy similar reading tastes and to talk about books. In the past, the
Central book group has read titles such as:
The Years of
Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson,
Galveston
by Sean Stewart,
The Sky So
Big and Black by John Barnes, and
Godmother
by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough. Join us at Central, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. to
discuss Greg Keyes' Briar King.
Westfall Library has just started a second science fiction book group, but
mystery, literary fiction, and non-fiction fans don’t despair, the San
Antonio Public Library has groups that meet at most branches to satisfy
your reading (and discussion) tastes.

Brook Hollow
Branch Library
Undergoing
Renovation and Expansion
On Tuesday, April 12,
at 10:00 a.m., District 9 Council Representative Carroll W. Schubert
joined the Library Board of Trustees, library management and
staff at Brook Hollow Branch Library for a groundbreaking ceremony
for the branch’s renovation.
When construction is
finished, the branch library will have an additional 1,500 square
feet, including a new children’s area and a quiet study room. The
public service area will be rearranged to allow more efficient use
of space and better customer flow. Additional plans include
replacing the roof, major elements of the heating, ventilation and
air conditioning system, and much of the interior lighting, as well
as reconfiguring the parking lot to improve traffic flow.
Library officials said
the project will entail closing the branch from late May through
September. Arrangements have been made to provide basic services to
Brook Hollow customers using a small bookmobile which will be parked
at the branch. Additionally, Summer Reading activities will
continue, thanks to an arrangement with the North East Independent
School District and Coker Elementary School.
The project architect
is Vitetta, a company which has previously worked with the Free
Library of Philadelphia, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals Library,
and the Jacksonville, Florida, Public Library. The $1.019 million
project fund came from the 1999 Bond Election, 2002 Community
Obligation Bonds, and the 2003 Bond Election.

Ridden Your Bike
Lately?
National
Bicycle Month
During May the City of San
Antonio celebrates National Bicycle Safety Month along with the rest of
the country. During this month, residents are encouraged to get on their
bicycles for exercise, enjoyment and transport. Ride your bike to work, to
the store, to the park or just for fun. Start riding in May and you might
be hooked all year long!
Remember when riding either
to work or for fun, cyclists must follow the rules of the road for safety.
All cyclists must observe all traffic signals, including stop signs, stop
lights and street directional signs. Cyclists may not ride at night
without proper reflector and light equipment; and cyclists may not ride on
sidewalks. While wearing a helmet is not required by law in the state of
Texas, it is the number one factor in riding safely.
The San Antonio Police
Department is concerned with the safety of cyclists, especially children.
SAPD recommends going over the following rules for children before they
get on two wheels, even in their neighborhood.
- Never ride out into a
street without stopping first.
- Obey stop signs.
- Check behind before
swerving, turning or changing lanes.
- Never follow another
rider without applying the rules.
- Before you get on your
bike, put on a helmet.

Exhibition:
Women of Afghanistan, Portraits and Stories
The San Antonio Public Library proudly presents
professional photographer Peggy Kelsey sharing her exhibit, Women of
Afghanistan, Portraits and Stories at the Central Library Gallery. Peggy
Kelsey was inspired to begin the Afghan Women’s Project after meeting with
a delegation of Afghan women who passed through Austin, Texas, during the
fall of 2002. She was amazed at how strong and full of life the women were
in spite of the difficulties they had been through. This was contrary to
the image of Afghan women as helpless victims sometimes portrayed in the
media. One of the project’s goals was to seek wisdom and strength from
these women who had experienced such repression and hardship. Merging her
love of photography with her interest in human psychology, Peggy brings
the lives and stories of these remarkable women to the West.
The exhibit will run through June 5
in the
Central Library's
Gallery on the 1st floor.
