Anti-Boredom Month

Cover of the book The Knitting Goddess: Finding the Heart and Soul of Knitting Through Instruction, Projects and Stories by Deborah Bergman. This July marks the 20th anniversary of Anti-Boredom month. July was first declared "anti-boredom" month by the "Boring Institute" of Maplewood New Jersey. Boring Institute founder Alan Caruba is a publicist and self-styled boredom Guru who is best known for his annual list of "Most Boring Celebrity of the Year ". He was inspired to create an institute devoted to life's most dull moments after sitting through yet another tedious and repetitive Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast in 1984. Now Mr. Caruba encourages Americans to avoid boredom by taking up at least two hobbies and meeting their neighbors.

Learn new hobbies, meet new people and broaden your horizons at your local library today. Check out some titles to help you along!

DIY Home Improvement Workshops

Home Depot logo [Logo courtesy of www.homedepot.com]Central Library and Home Depot Offer Weekend Warriors D-I-Y Workshops
Two great sources for learning how to do-it-yourself—Central Library and The Home Depot, 435 West Sunset Road—are teaming up in an original partnership to offer free D-I-Y clinics at Central Library on Saturday, July 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. And at the same time, they'll also offer children aged 5-12 the chance to get in on the action at a D-I-Y Kids Workshop.

Summer is a busy time for home improvements, so three one-hour sessions are planned to cover a variety of learning opportunities for weekend warriors on Central Library's lawn. The sessions are:

How to Lay Ceramic Tile You'll find it really is as easy as it looks on TV home makeover shows! Go home with the confidence to redo a wall space or rehab an old table with ceramic tiles. Home Depot Project: Laying Out Tiles Saturday, July 9 10:00 a.m.
Central Library lawn
Making Wood Shelving Units with Master Woodsman Ram Skilled in wood arts, Ram will demonstrate how simple it is to make shelving storage cubes at home. It's easy on you and your pockets. Saturday, July 9 11:00 a.m.
Central Library lawn
Pound the Pavers: Sidewalks & Drives Attractive garden walkways and drives don't require a professional! Sand, stone and time are basically all it really takes to give your home some curb appeal. Saturday, July 9 12:00 p.m.

Home Depot Kids Workshop While Mom and Dad are busy, kids can make and decorate a variety of projects for free; supervised by kid-friendly Home Depot and library staff. All kids will receive a free Home Depot work apron! Home Depot: Kid Workshops Saturday, July 9 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

"Most of us have started a home fix-up project presuming we'd just figure out the technique. Halfway through we end up throwing in the trowel," said event organizer Andrew Gordon. "This is a great chance for anyone to see how simple and economical these projects can be—if you know what you're doing before you start."

Gordon added that another factor for Central Library and Home Depot teaming up was to make the workshops, normally offered at Home Depot stores, easily accessible to the public.

"Central Library is easy for everyone to reach. You don't have to drive to the ‘burbs, which for some people isn't an option. We're bringing the resources to the community. By working together, Central Library and Home Depot—well, it's true—you can do it. We can help."

Of course, all these events are free and open to the public. One hour of free parking is available at the Central Library parking garage with validation. For more information, call the Central Library Information Line at 207-2500.

Car broken down on roadside.Central Library will partner with Red McCombs Toyota and Texas AAA to host a "Heels and Wheels" car clinic workshop designed for women on Saturday, July 23, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

At 10:00 a.m. in the Auditorium, Texas AAA will discuss the importance of regular car inspections, preventative maintenance and planning for and dealing with roadside emergencies. At 11:00 a.m. on the lawn, Red McCombs Toyota will offer a hands-on clinic to give auto amateurs the skills to perform basic repairs and vehicle maintenance--putting on a spare tire, changing wiper blades, fluids, fuses, etc. McCombs Toyota will also answer questions about what to ask before authorizing repair work.

First Impressions: Students Create Prints to Display at the San Antonio Central Library

About the Exhibit
Artpace has mounted a special exhibition of prints at the Central Library Gallery through July 17th. The prints were produced by students involved in ArtElements, Artpace’s K-12 educational program, in response to local artist Cruz Ortiz’s recent residency exhibition. During the Spring semester of 2005, students learned about exhibiting artists at Artpace and were mentored in the art of silk screening to create these exciting projects.

About Artpace San Antonio
Artpace serves as an advocate for contemporary art and as a catalyst for the creation of significant art projects. The programs support the evolution of new ideas in contemporary art and cultivate diverse audiences while providing a forum for ongoing dialogue. Learn more at www.artpace.org
