DO YOU DREAM
OF OWNING A HOME?
Make
Your Dream Possible!
The San Antonio Public
Library and the City of San Antonio Neighborhood Action Department (NAD)
are teaming up to provide resources for San Antonio area residents to
achieve the American dream of owning their own homes.
During the months of
August and September at several branch libraries, NAD staff will be presenting informal
question-and-answer sessions on buying a home.
Prospective buyers will receive basic information on financing, credit
history, selecting a realtor, homeowner’s insurance and rights, closing
costs and other important issues to assist them in making the right
decisions about the home buying process. Participants will also learn
about Fannie Mae, HUD and other assistance programs. Several of the
sessions will be conducted in Spanish and English.
Don’t miss a great
opportunity to learn what you need to know about buying a house! Join us
at one of these branch libraries:

LOTERÍA—THE MEXICAN
BINGO
Maybe
you haven’t played Lotería since you were a child, or maybe you’ve never
played at all. Anytime is a good time to play this version of Mexican
bingo called Lotería.
Lotería has been played for many generations by people of all backgrounds.
The game is similar to what we know as bingo but instead of numbers and
letters there are objects, people, animals or things in nature that are
called out; for example "la rana" the frog, "el soldado" the soldier, "el
pino" the pine tree. The game consists of game cards just like in bingo
and 54 flashcards with pictures of different objects to be called out.
There are different ways to win a game, which is decided by the person
calling out the flashcards. One can win by filling a line across the
playing card, filling up a whole card, filling in only the corners and
something called "el posito" which is only to fill the four middle squares
of a playing card. Regardless of how you play Lotería, it is great fun for
the entire family.
Join us every 2nd Monday of the month at
Guerra Branch Library to
experience Lotería. Don't forget to yell out "Bueno" should you win! |

JULIA CHILD,
CELEBRITY CHEF
Before
there was a whole television network devoted to food shows, Julia Child wrote
cookbooks and was on TV encouraging people to try new recipes and
techniques at home. She was the first celebrity chef, and
revolutionized the way America eats and thinks about food.
Knowing very little
about preparing a meal, Julia started cooking while living in France
after World War II with her husband. In order to learn more, she
enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu cooking school, and eventually opened her
own cooking school with two female friends. In 1961 Julia published
her first cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and having
moved back to the US she was offered a show on PBS. Her show, the
French Chef, debuted in 1963 and opened up a new world to at-home chefs. She demystified gourmet techniques and ingredients,
making fancy French cooking seem within reach and even fun. Julia
went on to publish many cookbooks and host or co-host several more
TV shows into her 80s and 90s! Julia Child died last year just shy
of her 92nd birthday, on August 15th.
Let Julia continue to
inspire meals in your house by checking out one of her books this
month!
As she loved to say, Bon Appetit!
