DEDICATION OF THE CENTRAL LIBRARY CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT TO DR. AMY FREEMAN LEE

Dr. Amy Freeman LeeThe San Antonio Public Library Board of Trustees and Library staff invite you to a very special event.

At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, the Central Library Children’s Department will be dedicated to Dr. Amy Freeman Lee. Dr. Lee, who died in 2004, was world-renowned for her contributions to the arts, politics, education, literature, and animal rights.

The San Antonio Public Library will honor Dr. Lee for her life-long devotion to our Young Pegasus Poetry Competition, which recognizes the creativity of young San Antonio poets from preschool to age 18. To quote from the memorial that will be unveiled on October 2, “In 1941, Dr. Amy Freeman Lee accepted the responsibility of chairing the Judges’ Committee of the San Antonio Public Library’s Young Pegasus Poetry Competition, dedicated to recognizing the work of San Antonio’s young poets. It became a labor of love for the rest of her life. From 1941 until 2004, Dr. Lee listened with her whole self to the voices of San Antonio’s children, as expressed in the poems they submitted for the Young Pegasus Poetry Anthology. Her energy, enthusiasm and devotion to the Young Pegasus program helped to keep it flying for more than sixty years.”

Please join us for this tribute to a San Antonian who was also a citizen of the world.

Displays at the Central Library during October will include a Japanese wedding kimono that was a gift to the City of San Antonio from the City of Kumamoto and ink paintings on rice paper by artist Mary B. Bowman. Branch libraries also have Matsuri activities scheduled for all ages. Look for our special Matsuri Calendar at all library locations!

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

National Breast Cancer Awareness MonthCancer Facts and Figures 2005 from the American Cancer Society reports that every two minutes a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer, and is the leading cancer diagnosis among women. Faced with the staggering numbers of this statistic, there are support groups, online information, and organizations trying to reduce those numbers. 2005 marks 20 years of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month programs to educate women about breast cancer. October is the month to extend the message to women about the disease with the emphasis on early detection, diagnosis and treatment. While the whole month is devoted to outreach, October 21st, 2005 is specifically a day set aside as National Mammography Day.

For more information, visit the following websites on National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and general sources of breast cancer information.
