How Does Dewey Do IT?
Dewey
Decimal Classification Organizes Information at SAPL
The San Antonio Public
Library uses the Dewey Decimal system to organize all of our
non-fiction books. This system keeps books on the same subject
together in the same place on the shelf, whether the books are for
auto repair, ethnographies, travel guides or cookbooks.
The Dewey Decimal
system is organized from 001 to 999 with decimals in between to
further organize all subjects. For example, cookbooks will start in
the 641 section, but the decimals help separate and organize
cookbooks for specific categories like Chinese cooking (641.5951), cookbooks
for diabetics (641.56314), low carb and low fat cooking (641.5638), or
vegetarian cookbooks (641.5636).
Not all books that are
organized by the Dewey Decimal system are non-fiction; there are
Dewey numbers for items such as poetry (811), plays (812) and folk
and fairy tales (398). There is even a number for fiction (813), but
most fiction books at SAPL are organized by author’s last name and
don’t include a number at all.
The general outline
for the Dewey Decimal system can be organized into the following 10
categories:
- 000 Computers,
information and general reference
- 100 Philosophy and
psychology
- 200 Religion
- 300 Social Science
- 400 Language
- 500 Natural
Science and mathematics
- 600 Technology
(applied sciences)
- 700 Arts &
recreation
- 800 Literature
- 900 Geography and
history
Whether you are
looking for books on making origami flowers (736.982), flower
gardening (635.9), or painting flowers with watercolors (751.42243),
you can use the catalog to find a book or DVD on the subject that is exactly what
you are looking for. Just write down the Dewey number, and you will
be on your way to find a particular book. Remember to look for similar books near the
number on the shelf.
