News News Release What: Young Pegasus Poetry Awards Ceremony San Antonio Public Library Celebrates Young Pegasus Poets For more than 75 years, the San Antonio Public Library has celebrated the talents of the city’s young writers with the Young Pegasus Poetry Competition. At 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 1, in the Hermann Sons Grand Lodge at 515 S. St. Mary’s, the Library will present the Awards Ceremony for the 51 young poets selected in the 2005 Young Pegasus competition. Each poet will be honored with a certificate and public reading of his or her winning poem. The 2005 Award Ceremony will be dedicated to the memory of Dr. Amy Freeman Lee, San Antonio educator, artist and writer, who served as the permanent chair of the Young Pegasus Poetry Awards for more than 50 years. Dr. Lee, who was herself a Young Pegasus Poet, died in 2004. Open to children 18 and under, the Young Pegasus Poetry Competition was begun to celebrate Book Week (now called National Children’s Book Week) in a new way. Poets are invited to submit their work, which is then reviewed anonymously by a panel of judges. Selected poems are printed in an anthology, and publicly read during the Awards Ceremony. The published writers receive certificates honoring their achievement and copies of the anthology in which their work appears. Copies of the anthology will be on sale at the Awards Ceremony, and throughout the year at the Central Library. Cost of the anthology is $7.00, and all proceeds support the Library. The ceremony is free and open to the public. Parking is available at no charge in lots to the west and north of the Hermann Sons Lodge. Wheelchair access is through a door opening off the west parking lot. For more information, the public can call 207-2500. Posted/Updated: 04/29/2005 |
