Poetry Competition Honorary Chair Naomi Shihab Nye Announces Call for Entries in 2005-2006 Young Pegasus Poetry Competition At 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 1, internationally known poet and Honorary Young Pegasus Chair Naomi Shihab Nye will announce the call for entries for the 2005-2006 Young Pegasus Poetry Competition. The San Antonio Public Library is looking for aspiring poets to enter the Young Pegasus Poetry Contest, a writing competition for students from preschool to high school. Ms. Nye, herself a former Young Pegasus poet, joined the Library to invite all Bexar County poets eighteen years of age or younger to enter their original work in this outstanding youth poetry competition. Entries will be accepted from September 1 until December 15, 2005. Submissions may be made online at www.sanantonio.gov/library; by mail to Young Pegasus, Central Library, 600 Soledad, 4th Floor, San Antonio, Texas 78205; or in person at any San Antonio Library location. Entry rules are also available at the Library’s website. Selected poems will be published in a special Young Pegasus Anthology, and the authors recognized at an awards ceremony, where each winning poem is read publicly by one of the judges’ panel. Begun by the Library in 1927, the Young Pegasus Poetry Competition is the longest-running such program in the country. It has been a springboard for success in fields ranging from literature to the law. Besides Ms. Nye herself, previous Young Pegasus poets have included such outstanding San Antonians as Jay Brandon, Henry Cisneros, and County Court-at-Law Judge Michael Mery.
