Want to Check out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? Here’s How!

The San Antonio Public Library has purchased 200 copies and 50 audiobooks of the last book in the blockbuster Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. One hundred of those books will be checked out by lucky children or teens at the Central Library’s Harry Potter release party at midnight on Friday, July 20, but the balance of 100 books and 50 audiobooks will be available throughout the library system for check-out by the public at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21. “Hold” requests (to reserve the book) may be placed beginning at 10:00 a.m. on July 21.

Security surrounding the book’s release was “tighter than we’ve ever seen it” said Robert Beebe, the San Antonio Public Library’s Collection Development Coordinator. When the books are delivered, one copy will be removed for cataloging purposes and the rest of the shipment will be held in a locked area until they are taken out for processing. Once processed, they will be returned to lock-up until time to release them to the public. No one may be allowed into the processing area who is not necessary to the operation, Beebe noted. “We have taken steps to meet the publisher’s security requirements while at the same time working to make the book available to our customers as soon as possible,” added Jennifer Velásquez, Interim Library Services Administrator.
