“Each public library, including any branch or other service outlet, is designated as a voter registration agency.” - Texas Election Code, Chapter 20, Section 1 C State Senator Jeff Wentworth and Mayor Pro Tem Mary Alice Cisneros will join San Antonio Public Library officials at the Central Library at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, to announce the launch of a voter registration campaign spearheaded by the San Antonio Public Library system. Beginning this month, anyone applying for a new Library card or renewing an existing card will be offered a voter registration form and encouraged to complete it. Libraries will also serve as collection points for completed registrations, and forward them to voter registration officials. The initiative is the creation of Library Director Ramiro Salazar, who sees it as a natural extension of the library’s mission to provide access to information: “Along with access to information, an informed citizenry needs access to the political process, and voting is the most fundamental form of that access.” “None of the rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution is more important than the right to vote,” said State Senator Jeff Wentworth. “None of the public buildings is more valuable than the library for citizens wanting to learn more about our government. Voter registration and a public library are a natural combination. I am just surprised that no one thought of it before.” For more than 100 years, the award-winning San Antonio Public Library has been a vital center for free learning, knowledge, communication, culture and enjoyment for all San Antonians. With a world-class Central Library, branch libraries throughout the city, and outstanding online resources, the San Antonio Public Library is as close as around the corner or the nearest computer.
