San Antonio Public Library presents an evening with author and philanthropist Greg MortensonIn 1993, during an attempt to climb Mountain K-2, Greg Mortenson became separated from other members of his party. He eventually stumbled upon a remote Pakistan village, whose inhabitants cared for him and nursed him back to health. When he noticed local children doing their lessons by writing in the dirt with sticks, he vowed to return to the village and build them a school. He fulfilled that promise, then built 55 more schools. His foundation is responsible for the education of more than 24,000 children – especially girls – in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the breeding ground of the Taliban. Mortenson’s book Three Cups of Tea chronicles his almost single-handed efforts to combat terrorism and hostility by providing opportunities for education. At 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, San Antonians will have an opportunity to hear this extraordinary story first-hand from Greg Mortenson himself. The reading and presentation will take place at the Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry Street. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Department of Community Initiatives, is free and open to the public. Former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw, one of the first donors to support Mortenson’s efforts, has said, “Three Cups of Tea is one of the most remarkable adventure stories of our time. Greg Mortenson's dangerous and difficult quest to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only a thrilling read, it's proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world.” For more information the public may contact the San Antonio Public Library at (210) 207-2500.
