In accordance with the Texas Open Records Act, the San Antonio Public Library protects the privacy of library users by prohibiting access to information about library users and their records to people other than the cardholder. Information about library materials borrowed or used, library services used, or information sought in the library, will not be disclosed to third parties except:

1. As reasonably necessary for the operation of the library (e.g. in order to place a book on hold or renew a library card);
2. To persons authorized, in writing, by the individual named in the records; or
3. By order or subpoena of a district court, issued on a showing of good cause.

Under Texas Law, minors are accorded the same confidentiality rights as adults.

In compliance with the Texas Open Records Act, we can disclose the following information to parents upon presentation of their child's library card:

• The total number of items currently on loan.
• The date those items are due to be returned.
• The amount of fines and fees owed on the account.
• Number of books currently available on the hold shelf.
• The status of any holds not currently available on the hold shelf for which the parent supplies the title.

The following information can be provided over the telephone to patrons who provide a name, address, and library card number:

• The total number of items currently on loan.
• The dates those items are due to be returned.
• The amount of fines and fees owed on the account.
• The number of items on hold currently available for pick-up.
• The status of holds for which the patron supplies the titles.
