Adopted by the Board of Trustees of the San Antonio Public Library on April 10, 2002.

MISSION

The San Antonio Public Library provides equal and open access to books, information and technology resources to promote a lifetime of reading and learning.

The Library contributes to the enjoyment, enlightenment and economic vitality of our diverse and dynamic community.

VISION

The San Antonio Public Library System will contribute to the success of our community by becoming a vital center of learning, knowledge, communication, culture and enjoyment for all San Antonians.

The Library will:

• Offer services that meet the needs of our diverse neighborhoods
• Provide welcoming spaces
• Build strong collections
• Support relevant technology
• Employ well-trained, friendly and flexible staff

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Learning for Life Long Success

Goal:	Children, youth and adults using the San Antonio Public Library have access to resources and services that support and enhance their efforts to succeed.
Objective:	Develop a systemwide plan that targets services to children 0-5 and their parents/caregivers Completion Date: December 2002
Objective:	Develop a plan to work in partnership with local organizations to better utilize library space for literacy, ESL, GED, and citizenship classes Completion Date: June 2003

Increasing Community Awareness

Goal:	Our diverse community is fully aware of the wide range of services available from the San Antonio Public Library system.
Objective:	Create and implement a marketing plan Completion Date: April 2003
Objective:	Identify partners who will assist in increasing awareness of library services Completion Date: June 2003
Objective:	Increase awareness of library services among target populations (such as the Hispanic community, parents and children, and senior citizens) by at least 5% for each of the next five years Completion Date: June 2007

Providing Access to Information

Goal:	The San Antonio Public Library provides accurate, timely, customer-focused information services using a variety of resources.
Objective:	Spec and acquire a more functional integrated library automation system that provides customers with broader and easier access to relevant information Completion Date: September 2003
Objective:	Assess staffing deployment for maximum customer service Completion Date: April 2004
Objective:	Establish a staff training program that ensures high quality service Completion Date: May 2004

Stimulating Economic Development

Goal:	The San Antonio Public Library contributes to economic development in the City of San Antonio.
Objective:	Evaluate resources at all locations and establish quality collections that meet the economic development needs of this city Completion Date: December 2003
Objective:	Determine and prioritize options to enhance job readiness in the community Completion Date: April 2003
Objective:	Provide enhanced small business resources in those libraries that serve the City’s targeted enterprise development zones Completion Date: June 2004

Serving the Hispanic Community

Goal:	The San Antonio Public Library provides quality accessible services, collections and programs that anticipate and meet the needs of the Hispanic community.
Objective:	Develop and implement a plan for essential bilingual signage and promotional materials and activities in every library facility Completion Date: September 2004
Objective:	Assess and develop collections that are responsive to the interests of our Hispanic community Completion Date: December 2005
Objective:	Design and operate a signature Hispanic Resource Center in the Central Library Completion Date: June 2007
