  • Electronic Zoo - This comprehensive site provides links to animal sites on the Web ranging from pigs, cows, and horses to dogs, cats, and birds. Site is searchable by keyword. Also includes links to animal and veterinary organizations, electronic publications, and newsgroups.

Local Information

  • Animal Defense League - This is the largest no-kill, non-profit animal shelter in the Southwest located in San Antonio. This site provides information about the League’s programs, services, upcoming events, hours of operation and a good section featuring some of the animals up for adoption.
  • Humane Society & SPCA of San Antonio and Bexar County - The HS/SPCA is a non-profit organization serving Bexar County. Their mission includes finding homes and temporary shelter for abandoned and unwanted animals, promoting the spaying and neutering of animals, preventing animal cruelty, and educating on responsible animal care. Check out the virtual shelter for a pet to adopt.
  • Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) - SNAP serves San Antonio with a mobile vet clinic that offers affordable sterilization surgery for dogs and cats.
  • San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, Animal Care Services - Get information on licensing of pets, rabies prevention (where to report animal bites), where to locate lost pets or adopt animals, and where to report cases of cruelty to animals. This site has a link to animal codes for the City of San Antonio and Bexar County which give information such as how many cats or dogs can be owned by an individual.

  • Acme Pet - Check the Pet Guides section for information on dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, exotics and fish. Includes a monthly newsletter for pet enthusiasts, listings of various pet products and services, and links to pet chat rooms. Site is searchable by keyword.
  • Cornell University Pet Loss Helpline - General information about pet death, euthanasia and the grieving process. Lists other hotlines one can connect to. Gives an annotated list of books to help children cope with the loss of a pet.
  • Delta Society - A national organization established to promote animals helping people improve their health, independence and quality of life. The goal is to expand public awareness of the positive effects of animals on family health and human development.
  • NewPet.com - This searchable site is for the new (or soon to be new) dog or cat owner. Find pet care information, advice on purchasing a pet, pet names, and interesting pet stories. Also includes a searchable animal shelter database.
  • Purina Breed Database - Find cat and dog breed descriptions with photos. The Interactive Breed selector helps you select the dog breed that best fits your personality and lifestyle.

Birds

  • Birds n Ways - Excellent site for information on parrots and exotic pet birds. Check the Library section for articles or visit the monthly newsletter, Winged Wisdom, for advice on caring for your pet bird. Locate other Internet sites related to a species by searching the Find Species Info page. Search by name, species, or category. Also includes links to veterinary pages, parrot associations and clubs, bird products, and more.
  • Pet Bird Page - The focus of this site is parrots, but you will also find information on budgerigars, cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds and lories, conures, macaws, cockatoos, finches, and canaries. Many entries include photographs.

Cats

  • Cat Fanciers - This site provides information on virtually any cat topic, as well as links to other cat-related sites. Find descriptions of cat breeds and answers to frequently asked questions about specific breeds. Also includes information on feline illnesses, purchasing a cat, and links to cat shows, clubs, and registries.
  • Cat Fancy - This site is from the Cat Fancy Magazine, and has articles and anything you ever want to know about cats.

Dogs

  • American Kennel Club - Comprehensive site of the American Kennel Club. Find detailed information on the 140 AKC-recognized breeds, as well as tips on purchasing, breeding, and training dogs. Also gives club listings, AKC rules and regulations, and upcoming show dates. This site is searchable by keyword or phrase.

Fish

  • AquaLink - "An information service for those interested in tropical fish." Coverage includes marine and freshwater fish, aquatic plants, and reef systems. Contains articles about starting an aquarium, fish diseases and problems, fish behavior, reef keeping, and much more. Site is searchable.
  • FINS: Fish Information Service - Searchable archive of information about tropical and freshwater aquariums. Includes a glossary, FAQs, pictures, directories, and other fish related sites.

  • Guinea Pig Hutch - Find information about guinea pigs, their care, and photographs, as well as links to other guinea pig sites.
  • Hamster House - This site describes itself as "the best hamster hangout for all hamster 
    lovers.
  • House Rabbit Society - Covers house rabbit care, behavior, diet, and socialization. Check the FAQ section if you are considering purchasing or adopting a house rabbit. Site is searchable by keyword. Also find links to other house rabbit pages.
  • National Gerbil Society - This site, maintained by the National Gerbil Society in Great Britain, includes information on gerbil species, diseases and ailments, behavior, a gerbil and jird species list, and more.

  • Animal Resources - Educational resource provided by Sea World/Busch Gardens. Geared toward students, this site contains information on a variety of animals from beluga whales and Clydesdales to manatees and polar bears. Discover how animals learn and are trained at Sea World in the Animal Training section.
  • Bird Survey - Check this site for data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) which includes distributions and population changes of North American birds. Search by species or category to locate abundance maps, population changes, and regional trends. The Tools for Learning About Birds section includes species identification, songs, and photographs. Find species-specific information in the Species Accounts area.
  • Breeds of Livestock - This searchable database provides information on breeds of livestock throughout the world. Livestock covered includes cattle, goats, horses, sheep, and swine, as well as buffalo, camels, donkeys, llamas, yaks, and some poultry breeds.
  • Gorilla Foundation - Although this site primarily focuses on the activities of the Gorilla Foundation and Project Koko, you will find useful data on gorilla life, types, population distributions, physical characteristics, growth, eating, social structure, and behavior.
  • Hay.net - "An exhaustive directory of horse sites on the Internet." This site is organized into 25 equine-related categories ranging from horse shoeing resources and breed associations to stables and stallion services. Links are briefly annotated.
  • Mammal Species of the World - Database of mammalian taxonomy that contains the names of the 4,629 recognized species of mammals. Names are organized in a hierarchy. Entries contain the scientific name, year described, common name, distribution, and current status. Search by scientific or common name. This site is provided by the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution.
  • Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network - Check the status of stranded marine mammals rescued by the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network. Photographs and descriptions of the rescue and rehabilitation process are provided, as well as tracking information for the mammals released.
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife: Nature - Excellent site for information on Texas wildlife and vegetation. Categories include a Natural Regions Map, Vegetation Types of Texas, a checklist of Texas Wildlife, and a list of Texas Threatened and Endangered Species. For detailed coverage of Texas wildlife, check the Wildlife Factsheets. Entries include species descriptions, life history, habitat, distribution, and photographs.
  • Tiger Information Center - Find information about wild tigers and their habitat. Check the All About Tigers section for descriptions of the five tiger subspecies, current tiger populations, behavior and ecology, extinct tigers, and other general facts about tigers. Also includes a section for kids and information about tiger conservation and societies.

  • Care for Pets - The American Veterinary Medical Association’s web page on animal health. Covers topics such as animal health, buying a pet, animal safety, selecting a veterinarian, and coping with the loss of a pet. Also includes a Kid’s Korner and Pet Stories.
  • Healthy Pets - Find information on small animal care provided by the American Animal Hospital Association. Check the Pet Care Library for answers to questions dealing with behavior, nutrition, animal/human bonding, common health problems, and preventative care. Also find pet care tips, a pet newsletter, and a searchable database of AAHA-accredited veterinary hospitals.
  • NetVet - A directory of veterinary resources on the Internet. Find links to veterinary career information and schools, organizations, veterinary and animal mailing lists, publications, government and law resources, commercial resources, and veterinary images. Site is searchable by keyword.

ENDANGERED SPECIES

  • Endangered Specie.com - This site covers endangered animals.
  • Endangered Species - Program from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals - Web version of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals maintained by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Search by species or common name, or search for all species in a specific taxonomic group and than narrow by country.

ZOOS & ANIMAL ORGANIZATIONS

  • ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) - Promoting responsible pet ownership, this searchable database contains pet care information, pet training tips, and information on bills addressing animal welfare issues.
  • Global Zoo Directory - Comprehensive directory that provides addresses and phone numbers of zoos worldwide. Some listings include zoo information such as number of animals, staff size, and attendance.
  • National Audubon Society - Learn more about this organization and its activities. Check the WatchList for a list of bird species at risk, as well as facts about many of the species listed. Site is searchable by keyword.
  • National Wildlife Federation - This site provides information on endangered species and habitats, current news and legislation, kids activities, links to wildlife magazines and publications, and more.
  • Oakland Zoo - Information about the Oakland Zoo. Students will find the Animals A-Z section very informative. Entries include species description, geographical range and habitat, diet, social structure, special adaptations, interpretative information, status in the wild, and photographs. Check Cool Stuff for interesting animal facts and interactive games.
  • San Antonio Zoo - Find general zoo information such as hours and location, upcoming events, and new animals at the zoo. Be sure to visit the Tour the Zoo section for a virtual tour of the zoo which includes species data and photographs.
  • Smithsonian National Zoological Park - This site provides information about the National Zoo in Washington, DC, and its animals.
