Art

  • Artefacts Canada - Previously known as the National Inventories, provides access to information on millions of museum objects, natural history specimens and archaeological sites. These records, contributed by museums and heritage organizations across Canada, have been assembled into three databases: Humanities, Archaeological Sites, and Natural Sciences.
  • Artists in Canada - The Artists in Canada database identifies the location of documentation files on Canadian artists. Libraries and galleries across Canada have contributed biographical information and lists of their holdings to create this union list. Accompanying the name of each artist are the names of the institutions that have a file on the artist.
  • The Frick Art Reference Library - The Library’s holdings of books, periodicals, auction sale catalogs, special collections and archives complement the photo archive to comprise one of the world’s most valued art research centers. Telnet link to FRESCO (Frick Research Catalog Online) is available, as well as an interactive form to ask reference questions.
  • On-line Visual Literacy Project - An exploration of common visual elements including the dot, line, shape, direction, texture, hue, saturation, value, scale, dimension, and motion. QuickTime video clips are used to illustrate further explanations of several of the elements.
  • Smithsonian Institution Research Information System (SIRIS) - SIRIS is the site for researching American painting and sculpture. This site includes the Art Inventories Catalog in the National Museum of American Art which contains over 300,000 records describing American paintings and sculptures. SIRIS also links to the Archives of American Art collections of papers of artists, art dealers, art historians and collectors.
  • TCAnet Village - This is the site for the Texas Commission on the Arts. It offers information on art schools, the creative process, and finding funding, and includes an online library for the arts and many more resources helpful to anyone interested in the arts.

Art History

  • Art and Life in Africa - Designed as an introduction and guide to a related CD-ROM project based on the Stanley Collection at the University of Iowa Museum of Art, this site proves to be an important resource on its own. Select from the valuable assortment of information including an online searchable Catalogue of the Stanley Collection of Africa Art (with images and descriptions of over 500 items), information on 107 African peoples, or profiles of 27 African countries. Of special interest are the Essays on African History, which include Chronology of African Art and Issues in African History.
  • Art History Resources on the Web - Compiled for use with Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, you can choose art topics and view images dating from prehistoric times to the twentieth-century. This extensive site also includes links to non-European art sites and research resources in art history.
  • Art Images for College Teaching (AICT) - Allan T. Kohl of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design presents AICT, "a royalty-free image exchange resource for the educational community." AICT images may be downloaded, and making derivative copies is permitted, as long as the images will be used for educational or personal purposes, not commercial. AICT on the Web consists of selections arranged in five broad chronological sections. One helpful feature is a concordance to about a dozen standard art history textbooks, allowing users to cross-reference AICT images to these books.
  • Artists on Art - The artist's perspective is always useful in understanding art. Artists on Art, put together by artist George Constable, has collected writings by artists on Inspiration & Perseverance, The Painting Process, Painting Style, Originality, and Looking at Art. The site is searchable by artist or topic.
  • Artnoir's African/American Art History 101 - Part of the Artnoir Showcase, this page is a gateway resource for information about some of the major African American artists.
  • Comic Art & Graffix Gallery Virtual Museum & Encyclopedia - This site, updated weekly, aims to become the "definitive encyclopedic reference to the comic world, from it's beginnings in sequential cave painting to today's dynamic media culture." The museum director, Richard Halegua, offers histories, biographies of artists, writers, creators, publishers and others involved in the field, articles on collecting comics and comic art, and galleries of comic art and comic book covers/stories. There's even a general store specializing in all things having to do with comic art.
  • Islamic Art - A product of Los Angeles County Museum of Art, this stunning site provides a general introduction to Islamic art, drawing upon works from its collection. The site includes 42 color images, chronological overviews, a map, and a glossary.
  • Origins of American Animation - The American Memory Project has released 21 short, animated films, and 2 fragments from 1900-1921 (available in RealMedia, MPEG, and QuickTime formats). The bibliographic records are browsable by title, subject, or date as well as searchable by keyword. "Notes on the Origins of American Animation" explains the history of each film in the collection, plus a general history of early animation.
  • The Precolumbian Graphic Arts Web Site - This beautiful site relies heavily on frames, java and lots of graphics so it loads slowly, but for those interested in Precolumbian art and archaeology, it is well worth the wait. PGAWS offers an extensive inventory of photographs, drawings, and computer-generated art. The site currently focuses on arts and crafts of the Classic Maya, and to a lesser extent, the broader cultural zone of Mesoamerica. There is good information here, along with links to museums and to other sites and a marketplace.
  • Rock Art at Rice - An introduction to prehistoric art from Rice University. While the site emphasizes art found in the southwestern and western parts of the United States, it also offers an image database, information about dating, conservation, resources and interpretive theories relating to rock art.
  • University of Iowa Libraries International Dada Archive - This is a great site for anyone interested in the Dada movement and includes bibliographies, finding aids, and some good links.

Search

  • Finding Images on the Web - This very helpful site is a tutorial provided by the librarians at Boston University to aid students in finding images. Sections include information about image copyright, search engines, image search engines, image archives/image collections and references.
  • The Mother of All Art History Link Pages - The Table of Contents offers links to a variety of resources such as "A Sampling of Art History Departments," "Research Resources," "Image Collections and Online Art" and "A Sampling of Online Exhibits."

  • Glenbow (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) - A museum in Western Canada containing an art collection which focuses primarily on the history and development of northwestern North America.
  • The Museum for Textiles (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) - Canada's only textile museum.
  • National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - In French and English.

  • The Great Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo - This virtual tour is stunning and a good source for information on Russian history and art.
  • The Louvre (Paris, France) - In English, French, Spanish and Japanese. En espaņol
  • Musee d' Orsay (Paris, France) - In French and English.
  • The National Gallery (London, England)
  • The National Gallery of Australia (Canberra, Australia)
  • National Palace Museum (Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China) - A collection of Chinese art dating back 7,000 years and containing nearly 700,000 items. In Chinese and English.
  • The State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia) - Thanks to a partnership with IBM, over 2,000 masterpieces of the Hermitage's fabulous collection are shared with the world. The museum plans to digitize its entire collection of approximately 3 million objects over the next several years. Founded by Catherine the Great, the museum's large number of quality artworks and fantastic architecture have made it one of the world's best. IBM is using this online exhibition to display its image search technology. Don't know the title or artist? You can search for images based on layout or color composition. The site is available in Russian and English.

  • ARLIS/NA - The Art Libraries Society of North America is the professional organization of art librarians and information specialists.
  • Christus Rex - A private, non-profit organization dedicated to providing information concerning art preserved in churches, cathedrals and monasteries worldwide.
  • National Endowment for the Arts Homepage - This site includes the latest National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) legislative updates and detailed information on the organization’s funding procedures and opportunities.
  • National Endowment for the Humanities - The NEH is a federal agency which supports learning in the humanities. It funds research, education, museum exhibitions, documentaries, preservation and other related activities. This web site offers information on everything from NEH-funded activities in 56 states and territories (searchable by state) to applying for grants.
  • TCAnet Village - This is the site for the Texas Commission on the Arts. It offers information on art schools, the creative process, and finding funding, and includes an online library for the arts and many more resources helpful to anyone interested in the arts.

  • Sculptor.org - This comprehensive resource is for sculptors and admirers of sculpture (in all media) alike. Links include resources for tools and supplies, sculpting tips, schools, biographies, sculpture in museums and public places, associations, services, events, and bibliographies.
