1721 & 1731: Missions San Jose
founded; Missions Concepcion, San Juan and Espada established in San
Antonio.
1731-32: Canary Islanders arrive.
Villa de San Fernando established and town surveyed.
c. 1734: San Pedro acequia
constructed; Casas Reales built on east side of plaza.
1738-55:
San Fernando church constructed.
1835-36: Fighting during the Siege of
Bexar takes place in and around the plazas; Santa Anna raises flag of “no
quarter” above San Fernando church.
1840: Council House fight between
Comanches and residents kills 40.
1852-53: Municipal building (the “Bat
Cave”) built on Military Plaza; Main Plaza is graded, but remains a bare
open space surrounded by colonial-era buildings.
1856: French Building, the first large
building on Main Plaza, constructed.
1860: General David Twiggs surrenders
to Confederate forces.
1873-74: San Fernando church rebuilt
and dedicated as a cathedral sanctuary.
1870s-1880s: New buildings constructed
on north and east sides of Main Plaza.
1880s: Main Plaza improved with
sidewalks and formal plantings.
1890: San Antonio City Hall
constructed on Military Plaza
1892-96: Bexar County Courthouse
constructed
1907-1929: Taller buildings
constructed on Main Plaza- Washer Building (1907); National Bank of
Commerce (1919); Frost National Bank (1922)
1913 & 1921: Floods damage downtown.
1914: Commerce Street widened
1926-29: Planning and construction of
bypass channel east of Main Plaza.
1927-29: Market Street widened and
extended to connect to Galan Street; Main Avenue extended south from Main
Plaza; bandstand built in center of plaza.
1960-62: Market Street alignment
changed; bandstand demolished; Main Plaza redesigned and fountain
constructed.
1975: Two buildings razed on east side
of Main Plaza.
1976: Galan Street closed
1985: City moves offices to Municipal
Plaza Building (Old Frost Bank Building)
1993: Trevino Street closed
2002: Restoration of Bexar County
Courthouse
2003: San Fernando Cathedral renovated
and Cathedral Centre constructed.
