A.J. Rodriguez

Career
A.J. Rodriguez was appointed Deputy City Manager for the City of San Antonio in May 2008, reporting to City Manager Sheryl Sculley. AJ’s duties include the direct supervision over the areas of International Affairs and Economic Development, Intergovernmental Affairs, Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, and Human Resources. He also provides oversight for Aviation, Convention Facilities, Capital Improvements, Public Works, Purchasing, Parks, Metro Health, Libraries, and Cultural Affairs.

Before joining the City, Rodriguez served as president & CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. During his four-year tenure, A.J. oversaw the day-to day operations of the organization, and was principally responsible for outcomes and results as outlined in the Hispanic Chamber’s strategic plan, under the direction of a 35- member Board of Directors. During A.J.’s leadership, the Hispanic Chamber more than doubled its membership base to 1,000+ members, and grew its total revenue by 64 percent, representing an unprecedented record for the organization.

He has served as vice president at the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and managed the Public Affairs Council, which focused on government affairs, public policy and education related issues.

A.J. worked two years in the Public Affairs Department of Zachry Construction Corporation, where he performed analysis, strategy, management, and issues advocacy (lobbying) regarding the company’s legislative issues at the local, state, and federal level.

Prior to his work at Zachry, A.J. had previously worked at the Greater San Antonio Chamber for three and a half years, as vice president of Small Business, assistant vice president of Communications and Governmental Affairs, and editor of the company newsletter. He began his work there as an intern in the Executive Department.

Professional Memberships and Community Involvement
A.J. currently serves on the Texas Lyceum, a group of 96 Directors from across the state, who focus on public policy issues. He also serves as a member of Mayor Julián Castro’s Green Jobs Leadership Council and the Sports for Life Advisory Board. He was awarded the San Antonio Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” award in 2003, the UTSA College of Business - Young Alumnus of the Year award in early 2007, and the UTSA 2008 Alumnus of the Year award. He is a former member of the Central Catholic High School Board of Directors, the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce Executive Committee and Board, JOVEN’s Advisory Committee, and the City of San Antonio River Commission.

Honors
He was awarded the San Antonio Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” award in 2003, the UTSA College of Business - Young Alumnus of the Year award in early 2007, and the UTSA 2008 Alumnus of the Year award.

Personal
A.J. and his wife, Estelle, will celebrate their sixteenth-year wedding anniversary in December and they have three children, Alexandra, 12, Arthur John, 8, and Isabella Carolina, 4.
