In an effort to solicit the involvement of the Edgewood community, approximately 1200 invitations to an initial community meeting were distributed to households surrounding the proposed development site. This community meeting was held on September 29, 2003 at St. John Bosco School, approximately a half-mile from the ASOH site. During the community meeting, city staff presented a description of completed ASOH developments, discussed the site selection process, and presented preliminary information about the site and planning process for the District 6 Affordable Showcase of Homes. There was a diverse range of subjects addressed by the questions and comments of community participants, among which were foundation construction, architectural design of the homes, opportunity of local contractors to participate in the ASOH, and the homeownership process. A second community meeting was held on October 27, 2003 in which community representatives were asked to participate in a visual preference survey, designed to assess the preferences of the meeting attendees on various aspects of residential development. Participants were asked to rate ninety slides depicting various elements of housing, landscaping, and streetscape patterns according to their preference. Meeting attendees were also asked to consider, discuss, and submit ideas for community identity including a community name, street names, and potential development attributes. During this exercise, community participants also stressed the importance of solid foundations, quality construction materials and workmanship, warranties and insurability of homes, and the establishment of a homeowners association. A bus tour of completed ASOH developments was given on Saturday, November 15, 2003. The tour was given to show participating residents of the Edgewood community the appearance and layout of the established neighborhoods, and to further explain the background and successes of these past projects. Approximately 10 residents were in attendance. The third community meeting was held on December 1, 2003 and focused on information and discussion related to specific aspects of residential development as they relate to the District 6 ASOH development. Professionals in the fields of structural engineering, home construction, residential development, real estate market analysis, landscaping, and urban planning were in attendance, and were asked to give brief presentations of their knowledge and recommendations as they related to the ASOH development.
