Coliseum Oaks was the City's first Affordable Showcase of Homes development. Located on the near east side, it opened in December 1995. The Showcase opened with 16 model homes constructed by 9 builders. The City was approached by the Coliseum/Willow Park Neighborhood Association in hopes of revitalizing the tax delinquent properties adjacent to their neighborhood. Initially 80 abandoned duplexes occupied this property. Existing structures were demolished with the assistance of the Weed and Seed Program. The
San Antonio Housing Authority Residents Business Program constructed the fence surrounding the subdivision. The project included a linear park as well as playground. The City Volunteer Corp., Home Depo volunteers, and the Coliseum/Willow Park Neighborhood Association constructed the playground, "Kidsville", through this volunteer effort. "Kidsville" originated when Novus Services enlisted the services of Ka Boom! Playground consultants in Washington D.C. and Learning Structures Inc. Novus Services donated $32,000 as a "Challenge Grant" and Home Depot donated $15,000 in materials.
